- Healthier ageing is just a click away

27 January 2012
2012 is the European Year for Active Aging. With an ever older population, Europe is looking for ways to improve the quality of living of their elderly people, a generation far more active and technologically trained than previous ones. This Futuris will take a look at how ICT devices can help patients with three different diseases to increase their quality of living -while staying at their homes. In Cadiz, Spain, we´ll be visiting an elderly house and a home where patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are currently testing a brand new device that will help them to know if an unexpected respiratory crisis is about to happen. This will help them call for aid in a faster way, or better prepare their transportation to nearby hospitals. We´ll be meeting COPD patients, personal caretakers, doctos and the computer scientists that have developed the prototype.

- An open market of assisted living apps for older people
The success of Apple's App Store and the Android Market has inspired EU-funded developers of 'Ambient assisted-living' (AAL) solutions to develop their own open application marketplace and work together on interoperable platforms. In doing so, they are hoping to mainstream technology that will help older people live more active and comfortable lives. 'A lot of projects have worked to develop a one-off product - something to remind you to take your medicine or a reminder to turn off your stove. But what's needed are solutions that deliver a whole range of services, so you don't have to get a new system for each service you need - one platform with modular services that are very easy to add and adapt,' explains Theresa Skehan, a project manager at the Swedish Institute of Assistive Technology (SIAT). SIAT coordinated the 'Mainstreaming on ambient intelligence' ( Monami) project, which has developed an open, scalable software architecture and implemented a diverse array of interoperable applications designed specifically to meet the AAL needs of older people. Need a sensor system to monitor someone's heart rate? Give the end user the sensor, install the application on their mobile phone, and the platform will handle the rest. Want to use data from that application to alert a doctor if the user's heart rate spikes? Add a second application, even from a different developer, to communicate the information and the two will work together seamlessly. Please click on the title above to access the full article.

- Safer, more active and independent older people: the proven benefits of 'Ambient assisted-living' technology
'When I am less worried, I do not think about the fact that I'm alone': the words of an older Swedish person who participated in a recent trial of European technology that supports active ageing. Loneliness from being disconnected from friends and family, fears about health and safety and worries about security are some of the many burdens of old age. EU-funded researchers are proving how technology can alleviate the problems. Like the person quoted above - who, according to carers, now talks about 'Ambient assisted-living' (AAL) technology 'a lot' - dozens of older people across Europe have recently experienced firsthand the benefits of ICT applications that can make them feel safer and more secure, monitor their health and help them stay in touch with family and friends. As part of the EU-funded 'Mainstreaming on ambient intelligence' (Monami) project, more than 80 elderly people living alone and in care homes in Spain, Slovakia and Sweden tested a wide range of AAL applications. - Bridging Research in Ageing and ICT Development (BRAID): Final Trends Analysis Report Released
-
6 February 2012
This market trends analysis looks at key barriers to entry for these technologies, including outlining trends in new technology incubation and development, and how technologies move effectively and efficiently from incubation to the marketplace, and how insurance and reimbursement structures may impact who can afford to adopt new technologies, and the size of the population these technologies may thus be likely to reach. BRAID is funded within the specific programme "Cooperation" and the research theme "ICT" of the 7th European Framework Programme.
