PhD Position on Streaming Data and Image Processing in Copiers and Printers
The Eindhoven University of Technology invites applications for a PhD position on streaming data and image processing in copiers and printersProject Description
The Electronic Systems group has an open position for a PhD student with a duration of four years. The position is funded by a Dutch national project called Netherlands Streaming (NEST) that has eight academic and industrial partners, including Philips, Thales, NXP, and Océ. The focus of this project is on high-performance streaming applications and considers applications domains such as medical systems, radar systems, infotainment systems, and copiers / printers. See http://www.nest-consortium.nl/ for more details on NEST.
The topic of this PhD position is Streaming Data and Image Processing in copiers / printers. The work will be carried out at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Electronic Systems group and at Océ-Technologies in Venlo. This PhD position offers a great opportunity to contribute to a large team of researchers in both academia and industry.
Image processing contributes to a large extent to the quality-perception and functionality of printers and copiers. Data rates are increasing and there is a trend to support many more features with a higher algorithmic complexity. Also the number of applicable implementation technologies has increased from ASICs only to a variety of multi-processor technologies that include FPGAs, CPUs, and GPUs. This means that the scope has broadened and resulted in a challenging area.
The main attention points during this PhD research will be on the following aspects:
- Parallelism: partitioning and mapping of algorithms for MPSoCs.
- Dealing with dynamism and variability, of data and platforms.
- Real-time guarantees while concurrently running multiple applications.
Department of Electrical Engineering
The Department of Electrical Engineering is responsible for research and education in Electrical Engineering. The discipline covers the application of electrical phenomena with respect to energy transfer, telecommunication, and information processing and the technologies involved. Both hardware, in the form of electronic circuits and accessories, and software, in the form of system software for electro-technical application, are the subject of study. Existing and new electrical components and systems are analyzed, designed and realized. In addition, the relevance for society is the subject of research, addressing topics such as user friendliness, sustainability, and environmental impact. The department wants to distinguish itself primarily in the fields of smart sustainable systems, the connected world, and care and cure.
The vacancy is positioned in the Electronic Systems (ES) group of the department of Electrical Engineering. The mission of the chair Electronic Systems (ES) is to provide a scientific basis for design trajectories of electronic circuits and systems. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with Océ-Technologies.
Océ-Technologies
Océ, a Canon Group division, is a major player in Wide Format, Commercial Printing and Business Services. Worldwide, Océ has over 20000 employees and is active in over 80 countries. About 1600 employees are working in various R&D centers in Europe and the US. The main R&D center, in Venlo, has 850 employees.
Requirements
Candidates for this position should have a Master degree in electrical engineering or physics, with excellent grades. A background in signal processing and / or hardware architectures as well as the ability to link theory to applications is an advantage. Affinity with hardware/software co-design and system-level architecting is a must.
Other key attributes include good analytic and programming skills and excellent social and team working skills. You should be eager to push the state-of-the-art, and show your research results with working demonstrators and publications in top conferences and journals.
What we offer
We offer a challenging job at a dynamic and ambitious university through a fixed-term appointment for the period of 4 years. The research in this project must be concluded with the attainment of a PhD degree. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment conditions.
A salary is offered starting at EUR 2042 per month (gross) in the first year and increasing up to EUR 2612 per month (gross) in the last year. Moreover 8% bonus share (holiday supplement) is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given. The university offers an attractive package of fringe benefits such as excellent technical infrastructure, child care, savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities.
TU/e offers you also the opportunity for personal development by developing your social and communication skills. We do this by offering every PhD student a series of courses that are part of the Proof program as an excellent addition to your scientific education.
