Obesity affects around 27% of adults in the United States(1)(2). Obesity is one of the most important predisposing factors for atherosclerosis and increases risk of cardiovascular disease two- to three-fold(3). Obesity is also associated with increased risk for epithelial tumors such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (4-6). Our goal is to study how the components of the obesity state (inflammation, steatosis hyperinsulinemia and microRNA (miRNA)) affect HCC and atherosclerosis development. After that we will study how the modulation of these factors by stress kinases is able to affect the development of both diseases.
We will use several mouse models in which one or more of these factors are reduced following induction of metabolic disease. We will also determine whether specific miRNAs that are down- or upregulated in the liver of mice on a high fat diet are implicated in HCC development.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
PhD obtained between January 1st 2005 and October 15th 2010. We will consider us positive previous work with animal's models, microRNA and liver damage.
