Digital Agenda: Reflection Group on digitisation seeks views on boosting cultural heritage online

(18 August 2010)The European Commission's Reflection Group ("Comite des Sages") on digitisation launched today a consultation on how best to foster the online presence of cultural heritage. As Europe's creative and cultural sectors undergo a revolutionary transition, innovative solutions are needed to keep up with technological advances and reap their full benefits. The Commission has asked the Reflection Group to look at how best to speed up the digitisation, online accessibility and preservation of cultural works across Europe. The consultation will run until 30 September 2010.

VPH NoE: Strategic consensus meeting

29 September 2010 Brussels, Belgium

The scope of the meeting is to inform the whole VPH research community of all the strategic activities that are being conducted by various members in relation to the VPH research in the domain of ICT for health, the VPH internationalisation projects, the VPH toolkit, the VPH infrastructures, the ARGOS international observatory, the VPH FET initiative, etc. The VPH Network of Excellence invites all those who are involved with the VPH initiative to an all-hands meeting, where VPH key figures will be invited to update the community on strategic activities, to present detailed information and to discuss openly the general strategic directions that the VPH initiative will take in the next few years. From this public discussion will emerge the 2010 update to the VPH Research Roadmap, that the VPH NoE will compile and publish before the end of the year. Participation is open and free to anyone, but pre-registration is required.

VPH Industry Day - 2nd edition

8 September 2010 - 9 September 2010 Barcelona, Spain

The second VPH Industry Day will be held in Barcelona on 8th and 9th September 2010. The event is organised by the European Network of Excellence for the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) in collaboration with the Spanish Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology, the University of Sheffield, University of Pompeu Fabra and Instituto Ortopedico Rizzoli. It aims to increase the awareness amongst European Industry of the vision, the concepts, and the concrete technological achievements of VPH-related research. This year the event is organised around three themes: a) Research to Business (R2B): VPH research projects are presented to industry experts both in terms of vision and of exploitable results; b) Business to Business (B2B): Companies present to other companies concepts, products and services that can be used to develop VPH-related products; and c) Regulatory to Business (G2B): Regulators discuss standardisation and regulatory affairs in Europe and the USA relevant for VPH-based technology.

Final Conference "Healthy Regions: When Well-being Creates Economic Growth"

23 September 2010 Brussels, Belgium

The Healthy Regions project has been running for three years and has had as overall objective to develop a toolbox with methods, tools, guidelines and recommendations that regional and local authorities can use to bring health and health promotion on the political agenda. The Healthy Regions project included a trial period, where the participating regions have tried out the toolbox. During this final conference each of them will show how they used the tools, what they got out of it and how the Healthy Regions project made a difference on a political and / or practical level.

Public tender "Follow up to the PSIplatform"

(Deadline: 22/09/2010) The purpose of this tender is the purchase of a follow up service to the PSI Platform for the promotion of a dynamic PSI re-use market across the EU. The new project/services will build on the work and content of the current web site. The future contractor will, in addition, monitor the impact on the re-use of PSI of new policies in key areas such as: pricing and charging policies, licensing, complaints and redress procedures, information systems for facilitating access to and re-use of PSI, etc. Tender documentation can be downloaded from the Commission's Public Sector Informtaion web site.

CALL FOR TENDERS
Study SMART 2010/0039 - Survey of Schools, ICT and Education

(Deadline: 05/09/2010) The objectives of the study are to collect information on and assess the impact of ICT use in schools for the purpose of teaching/learning. To this end, (an) appropriate survey(s) will be designed and carried out in the 27 EU Member States and Croatia, Iceland, Norway and Turkey and the results assessed and discussed in a study report, also containing an extensive set of data charts and tables. In addition, information on the situation in each country will be prepared in the form of a set of individual country profiles.

Study SMART 2010/0033: The Socio-Economic Impact of Bandwidth

(Deadline: 05/09/2010) The objective of the study is to provide an assessment of the socio-economic impact of very high speed internet. By "very high speed internet" we mean internet services with at least 30 Mbps download speed. The study should make reference to all technologies capable of providing such speeds now or in the future. When calculating the socio-economic impact, the study should elaborate in detail the deployment and operational costs of networks as well as the benefits to the people, the businesses and the economy as a whole. Economic as well as social factors should be evaluated. The study should develop various scenarios on the future development of internet services and quantify the impact of higher bandwidth for each scenario. The study should provide forecasts until 2020 and cover the EU27+4 (including Norway, Iceland, Croatia and Turkey).

Study SMART 2010/0030: Statistical methodologies on Internet as a source of data gathering

(Deadline: 13/09/3010) Internet traffic flows (in a broad sense, involving all types of information exchanged through the internet) can provide a source of data on socio-economic phenomena complementary to the data usually collected by interviewing internet user. The traffic generated by the different activities over the internet can be analysed and processed to obtain statistics on the use of internet. The general objective of this study is the proposal of a methodological framework for new indicators and of a roadmap for implementing at a large scale the promising applications of the concept of internet as a data source in the domain of monitoring information society developments.

Integrating Innovation and Investment: the Ambient Assisted Living Investment Forum 2010

14 September 2010 - 15 September 2010 Odense, Denmark

This year, for the first time ever, the Ambient Assisted Living Forum (AAL Forum) 2010 will be preceded by an Investment Forum. Ambient Assisted Living products and services are ICT-based solutions, such as in-home monitoring devices or telemedicine systems, which help seniors remain independent, active and socially connected for a longer time. The AAL Investment Forum aims to stimulate more innovation and investment in AAL by bringing together innovative ICT enterprises in the Ageing Well market with potential public and private investors. A key activity will be a matchmaking session where innovators can pitch their smart solutions to potential investors.

eHealth Strategies in European Countries: Study validation workshop

16 September 2010 Brussels, Belgium

On 16 September the European Commission and empirica, in cooperation with the Belgian Presidency of the EU, will present the final results of the eHealth Strategies study to a wider public. Commissioned by the EC in 2008, the eHealth Strategies study has surveyed the status-quo and assessed the progress made by EU Member States and EEA countries towards realising European eHealth Action Plan goals. The workshop will summarise key outcomes and feature presentations by representatives of national eHealth programmes on lessons learned from eHealth strategic planning and implementation. After a networking lunch and the presentation of good practice cases, policy recommendations for further eHealth diffusion will be discussed. The workshop is free of charge, but by invitation only.

ERIC 2010 - Intel European Research and Innovation Conference 2010

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary celebration of Intel Braunschweig, ERIC 2010 Germany, will take place in the city of Braunschweig. The 8th Open Days will be held between 4 and 7 October 2010, a period during which the debate on the European Union's '2020' agenda, its policies and future budget, will be in full swing. Regions and cities will play a major role in the discussions on 'EU2020' agenda, on the budget review, and on the future of EU cohesion policy post-2013. The Open Days are an ideal framework for them to showcase good practice in the field of strengthening regional competitiveness, territorial co-operation and social and economic cohesion, to share experiences with others and to impact on the political debates among EU institutions and Member States. In 2010, the Open Days will concentrate on 'competitiveness, co-operation and cohesion'. Please note the session on "Ageing and persons with disabilities - turning the challenge into opportunities through regional innovation with ICT and accessibility measures" (session 07C26).
