Competitiveness Council - 30 & 31 May 2011

(27 May 2011) The EU competitiveness Council will meet in Brussels on Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 May under the chairmanship of Mr Zoltan Csefalvay, Minister of State for Strategic Affairs of Hungary. The European Commission will be represented by Vice-President Neelie Kroes, responsible for Digital Agenda, Vice-President Antonio Tajani, responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship, Commissioner Marie Geoghegan-Quinn, responsible for Research and Innovation, Commissioner Michel Barnier, responsible for Internal Market and Services and Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, responsible for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth. Commission and Member States are expected to make a push on several key issues: patent, Single Market Act, Innovation, Research, Digital agenda and Education.

EU Telecoms Council, Brussels 27th May

(26 May 2011) Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda, will urge the EU's Council of Telecoms Ministers meeting in Brussels on 27th May to boost internet access in Europe by working with the European Parliament to adopt legislation to make radio spectrum available for wireless broadband by 2013. In addition Vice-President Kroes will present the Net Neutrality Communication to the Council and will discuss with the Council how to achieve the Digital Agenda goals of ensuring basic broadband for all by 2013 together with a higher level of digital inclusion by 2015. The Council is expected to agree to the Commission's proposal to prolong the current mandate of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) by 18 months, pending its consideration of a proposal to modernise and reinforce the Agency, and Vice-President Kroes will urge Member States to improve and strengthen their national cyber-security capabilities. Vice-President Kroes will also update Ministers over lunch on developments on roaming services in the EU.

Statement by Vice-Presidents Viviane Reding and Neelie Kroes on International Missing Children's Day

(25 May 2011) European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes said: "The pan-European hotline number 116 000 is a crucial tool for finding missing children. Today, 25th May, marks the deadline for EU Member States to implement new telecoms rules requiring them to 'make every effort to ensure that citizens have access to a service operating a hotline to report cases of missing children', and stipulating that 'the hotline shall be available on the number 116 000'".

New telecoms rules benefit citizens and businesses across Europe

(23 May 2011) By 25th May 2011, Europeans will enjoy new rights and services regarding phones, mobile and Internet. New EU telecoms rules to ensure a more competitive telecoms sector and better services for customers are due to be implemented in national law by this date. They include the right for customers to switch telecoms operators in just one day without changing their phone number, the right to more clarity about the services customers are offered and better protection of personal data online. New oversight powers for the European Commission and regulatory powers for the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) will create more regulatory certainty and help telecoms operators to grow in a single, pan-European telecoms market. The Commission has worked closely with Member States to seek swift implementation of these EU rules and will consider launching infringement proceedings against Member States which have not implemented them in time. Reinforcing the Single Market for telecoms services is a key objective of the Digital Agenda for Europe.

How new EU rules improve privacy protection for internet users

(23 May 2011) Clearer rules on customers' rights to privacy are laid down in new EU telecoms rules, which are due to be implemented in national law in all Member States by 25 May 2011. The rules require operators to secure personal data properly and to inform their customers and data protection authorities promptly when personal data is lost. The rules also require Internet users to be better informed about data other parties store or access on their devices and improve the tools for fighting spam. Future Network and Mobile Summit 2011

14 June 2011 - 17 June 2011 Warsaw, Poland

This conference will address all the challenges of building the Future Internet, which will be based on mobile, wireless and fixed broadband communications infrastructures. The Summit showcases European research in the field, in particular from the EU Future Networks projects, and positions it within the multiplicity of related initiatives supported in other regions of the world. The scientific programme is based on an open Call for Papers, with Research, Technical, Visionary or Techno-Economic Scenarios in focus. A Proposers' Networking Day will take place on Tuesday 14 June as a pre-conference event. The focus is on the upcoming FP7 and Celtic-Plus research funding opportunities relevant to the networks community.
