Group: Molecular Biology of Pneumococcus
Supervisor of the position: Dr. Mónica Amblar Esteban
Research interest of the group: Our group is interested in the role of small non-coding RNAs as modulators of virulence in Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Pneumococcus is the main etiological agent of community-acquired pneumonia and a major cause of mortality and morbidity among children and the elderly. Understanding how bacterial pathogens respond to dynamic environments is a central aspect in microbial pathogenesis and there are increasing evidences implicating small RNAs as vital regulators of adaptation and virulence.
We have identified a big repertoire of small non-coding RNAs that are expressed in S. pneumoniae using next-generation sequencing. Now, our main goal is to elucidate how these small RNAs modulate gene expression in pneumococcus to adapt its metabolic needs during infection. The work will involve in vitro growing of bacterial cells under different stress conditions, construction of knock out strains, genomic translational and transcriptional fusions, analysis of gene expression through qRT-PCR and Northern blot, analysis of virulence, etc.
Requirements:
1. PhD obtained on September 1, 2008 or later.
2. At least 2 first author papers in international journals.
3. Previous experience in bacterial manipulations and biochemistry and molecular biology techniques.
