The Microelectronics Group ("Dispositivos y Diseño Microelectrónico") at Universidad Politécnica de
Cartagena operates four laboratories: Nanotechnology, Electrical and Electromagnetic Characterization,
Microelectronic Design, and Photonics. Each of these laboratories is equipped with state of the art facilities,
including thin film growth, semiconductor parametric testing, microwave and mm-wave electromagnetic
characterization, THz Time Domain Spectroscopy, integrated circuit testing, and optical characterization.
The Group is part of the Department of Electronics and Computer Science ("Electrónica y Tecnología de
Computadoras") at the Faculty of Telecommunication Engineering ("Ingeniería de Telecomunicación"). At
present the group has a multidisciplinary team of 6 faculty members with a broad experience in
complementary fields such as materials science, semiconductor physics, RF and microwave engineering,
and microelectronic design and fabrication.

The aim of this project will be to explore the capabilities of the new Terahertz Time Domain Spectroscopy
system (THz-TDS) recently available at the host group laboratory. The candidate will be able to carry out
research with this equipment in any topic of his/her choice. Possible applications of THz-TDS include many
different fields of Physics, Chemistry and Engineering, such as materials characterization, semiconductor
physics, and THz device applications in electronics, telecommunications and other fields of engineering.
Possible experiments include Optical Pump THz Probe Spectroscopy to explore ultrafast carrier dynamics in
semiconductors and graphene. In addition to THz-TDS, the host laboratory is equipped with state of the art
facilities in electrical, optical and electromagnetic characterization of materials and devices.
