The Extraterrestrial Physics Division at the Institute for Experimental and Applied Physics of the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel is currently designing and building various sensors for ESA's Solar Orbiter mission which is foreseen to launch in January 2017. We currently have a full-time engineering vacancy in category TV-L E11:
Mechanical Engineer (m/f):
Solid background in thermal and structural modeling using FEA (preferably with NASTRAN/PATRAN or ESATAN); solid background in mechanical engineering and related calculations, technical documentation; good command of English.
Opening date: May 1, 2012 or a later date to be agreed upon. Duration up to February 2013 with a highly likely extension to January 2015, to be confirmed in fall 2012.

Solar Orbiter is ESA's next mission to investigate the close environment of the Sun, approaching the Sun more than three times closer than the Earth. This challenging mission is scheduled for launch in January 2017, and delivery of flight instruments in January 2015. IEAP/CAU is developing four sensors which will measure various components of the radiation environment during the entire mission, foreseen to last until 2024, with a possible extension to 2027.
Tasks:
Mechanical design of sub-assemblies for scientific space instrumentation. Structural and thermal analysis using finite element analysis software (preferably NASTRAN/PATRAN or ESATAN), and reporting thereof. Tests and qualification of sub-assemblies and instrument, including preparation of procedures and reports. Experience in prototype development is a strong asset. This position is likely to require some travel to the US and within Europe. The development contract is split into a first phase limited to February 2013 with a highly likely second phase extending to January 2015.
