Applications are invited for a Ph.D. fellowship(contrato/beca predoctoral FPI) available in the Group of membrane nanomechanics, Biophysics Unit, University of the Basque Country. The fellowship is associated with the research project "Stoichiometry and the mechanism of action of dynamin fission machinery (Esteqiometria y el mecanismo de accion de la dinamina durante la fision) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (project #BFU2012-34885, to Dr. Vadim A. Frolov). The project is aimed to understand how proteins shape and remodel cellular membranes. We utilize advanced biophysical techniques, including super resolution imaging and nanoscale electrical admittance measurements, to resolve how individual proteins bind to, deform and destabilize cellular and biomimetic membranes. The project is conducted in collaboration with leading research centers in US and Russia. The key findings are outlined in:

1. Shnyrova A.V., Bashkirov P.V., Akimov, S.A. Pucadyil T.J., Zimmerberg, J.; Schmid S.L., Frolov V.A. Geometric catalysis of membrane fission driven by flexible dynamin rings. Science 2013 339:1433-6.

2. Schmid S.L. and Frolov V.A. Dynamin: Functiona
l design of a membrane fission catalyst Ann. Rev. Cell Dev. Biol. 2011 27:79-105.

3. Bashkirov P.V., Akimov S.A., Evseev A.I., Schmid S.L., Zimmerberg J., Frolov V.A. GTPase cycle of dynamin is coupled to membrane squeeze and release, leading to spontaneous fission. Cell 2008, 135:1276-86.

To extend this list, we are looking for a highly motivates candidate with background in physics and appreciation of biophycics and molecular biology. S/he is expected to learn how to produce, visualize and manipulate membrane nanotubes, quantify their geometry and elastic parameters and further use the nanotube to learn how individual proteins and small protein complexes generate force and produce membrane deformations at nanoscale. The inquiries, questions etc. are welcomed at: vadim.frolov@ehu.es.
