- ICT 2010: Call for proposals for exhibits - Submission deadline extended

(29 March 2010)The European Commission has today extended the deadline for the Exhibition Call at ICT2010 to 15 April 2010. Any organisation involved in European research and development is invited to submit their ideas for an exhibit at ICT2010, taking place in Brussels on 27-29 September 2010. The call is open to all sorts of actors in ICT research: universities, research institutes, non-profit organisations, public authorities and commercial companies including small and medium sized enterprises.

- Call For An Industrial Partner - TOBI project

(6 April 2010)TOBI is a large European integrated project funded under FP7 which will develop practical technology for brain-computer interaction (BCI) that will improve the quality of life of disabled people and the effectiveness of rehabilitation. A vacancy in the consortium has opened for an industrial partner established in an EU Member State or Associated State, to perform the following tasks: a) Support the development of one or more application and/or research project areas, according to applicant experience. b) Actively participate in the development of TOBI industrial strategy to bring TOBI results in the field of BCI technology to the market. Deadline: The call closes on 2 June 2010 at 17h00 (Brussels time) Estimated costs and funding for the tasks: Total EC funding available for new partners is up to €480.000.

(6 April 2010)The KSERA (Knowledgeable SErvice Robots for Aging) project's main aim is to develop a Socially Assistive Robot that helps elderly people, especially those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, with their daily activities and care needs and provides the means for effective self-management of their disease.

- U.S. Access Board releases a draft of the updated standards and guidelines for ICT

(7 April 2010)On March 17, the U.S. Access Board released for public comment a draft of the the "Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Standards and Guidelines." The released draft includes proposed revisions to various performance criteria and technical specifications that are designed to improve accessibility, add clarity to facilitate compliance, address market trends, and promote harmonization with other guidelines and standards. Products and technologies covered by this rulemaking include telephones and cell phones and other telecommunication products, computer hardware and software, websites, media players, electronic documents, and PDAs, among others. Access is addressed for various disabilities, including those that are sensory, physical, or speech-related in nature. As part of this rulemaking, the Board proposes to supplement its ADA Accessibility Guidelines, which cover access to facilities, to broaden coverage to include certain types of interactive transaction machines such as point-of-sales machines and self-service kiosks.

- Active Ageing: Smart Solutions, New Markets - AAL Forum and AAL Investment Forum

The Ambient Assisted Living Forum (AAL Forum 2010) aims to provide a platform for all stakeholders – investors, researchers, policy makers, industry providers and end-users – to discuss smart solutions for improved quality of life in later years. Ambient Assisted Living Technology is a relatively new and vibrant field of investment, research and development. Policy makers are already exploring options and planning on future technology investments in this area. Several regional and national initiatives are emerging around Europe to support public and private investment. In support of this, the 2010 AAL Forum will now launch and host the first ever European 'AAL Investment Forum'. The objective of the one-day Investment Forum is to improve communication between investors and researchers and introduce investors to projects which require immediate and/or long term funding. The event will provide a matchmaking bazaar and tailored presentations for investors, software developers and other interested parties.

- reminder: 4th call for Proposals under the ICT Policy Support Programme (based on WP2010) closes on 1st June.

(Deadline: 01/06/2010) The fourth call for proposals opened on 21 January 2010 with a deadline of 1st June 2010. Of interest: Objective 3.3 (e-Accessibility of Public Digital Terminals foresees the support of one large or several smaller pilot actions) and Objective 3.4 (Assistive technology and accessibility portal foresees the launch of one or more thematic networks).

This Consultation meeting brought together experts from all over Europe. The objective was to provide strategic guidance for future topics for the ICT Policy Support Programme in the field of ICT & Ageing for 2011 and beyond. The outcome will be used as input for the preparation of future calls for proposals. Topics under the ICT Policy Support Programme were discussed, in particular demand driven pilot projects related to independent living of elderly people: Fall prediction, prevention and protection of elderly people; Enhanced mobility of elderly people. The meeting was organised back to back with a consultation meeting on the AAL Joint programme.
