EU and Brazil strengthen ties with EUR 10 million joint ICT field research programme

(8 November 2011) The European Commission and the Brazilian Government have agreed, at their annual Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) dialogue in Brasilia, to launch a new coordinated call for research and development proposals with EUR 10 million available in funding.

European Innovation Partnership agrees on actions to turn ageing into an opportunity

(7 November 2011) The Steering Group of the pilot European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing has agreed on joint actions in response to the societal challenge of an ageing European population. The Group is made up of people from the health and social sectors, businesses, civil society to public authorities. In today's Strategic Implementation Plan, the Group sets out priority actions to meet the challenge of ageing through innovation. The overarching objective is to ensure that the average European citizen has two more active and healthy years to live by 2020. The implementation plan is the first step towards that objective, and focuses on three main areas of life events: prevention, care and cure, and independent living.

Commission awards EUR 600,000 for new Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom

(7 November 2011) The European Commission is establishing a Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom in Florence with a EUR 600 000 grant to the European University Institute's (EUI) Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. Starting in December 2011, and headed by Professor Pier Luigi Parcu, the Centre will develop new ideas on how to ensure a highly diverse and free media, and work to enhance the quality of the reflection on media pluralism in Europe.

Commission questions plans for regulating mobile termination rates in Poland and starts an in-depth review

(7 November 2011) The European Commission has written to the Polish telecoms regulator, UKE, to express its serious doubts about the compatibility with EU law of UKE's proposed regulation of mobile termination rates (MTRs). This is the first time the Commission decided to use its new powers under Article 7a of the Telecoms Framework Directive to scrutinise remedies proposed by national regulators.

Digital Agenda: EU & US conduct readiness tests for cyber attacks in "Cyber Atlantic 2011"

(4 November 2011) The first test of trans-Atlantic responses to cyber incidents, including cyber attacks, took place in Brussels on 3 November. Experts from the US Government joined counterparts from EU Member States to simulate how cyber security authorities on both sides of the Atlantic would cooperate in response to attacks. Two hypothetical scenarios were tested: a cyber-attack which attempts to extract and publish online sensitive information from the EU's national cyber security agencies, and an attack on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems in EU power generation equipment.

FET-Flagship Pilots Midterm Conference and Exhibition

24 November 2011 - 25 November 2011 Warsaw, Poland

Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagship pilots will present their vision, objectives, and expected impact on science, technology and society. The European Commission will announce the content of their draft proposal regarding selection criteria and process and implementation of FET Flagships. Debates on the international perspective and the role of civil society in FET Flagships will be held. The event will also offer a platform for bilateral discussions between Flagship Pilots and funding organizations. Registration will be free but by invitation only.

The IFA 11th Global Conference on Ageing

28 May 2012 - 1 June 2012 Prague, Czech Republic

This event will provide a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary forum for networking and the sharing of information related to new research and evidence-based programmes and policies. It is an opportunity for those interested in the field of ageing and the evolution of the human spirit to take stock of social trends, evaluate recent policy developments and collectively chart a course. The aim is to facilitate stronger linkages among research, policy and practice and explore in greater depth the role of civil society in building effective relationships. Deadline for abstract submission is 1 December 2011.

This event, organised by ETNO, will seek to foster an open discussion among the ICT and energy industries and policy makers to find synergies, opportunities and a common view for the successful development of broadband networks and smart grids in Europe. Topics for discussion will include business models, regulatory aspects and privacy issues.

ICT Research and Innovation Challenges in Eastern European Member States

11 November 2011 Budapest, Hungary

Eastern EU Member States have very low ICT business expenditures in ICT R&D in relation to their GDP. They also show a very low rate of ICT public expenditures in R&D in relation to their GDP. Although several of them have recorded spectacular increases in ICT manufacturing employment, deeper analysis tends to indicate that these countries are still hosting rather low value added activities. The mission of this conference is to confront such facts and views to the testimony of the stakeholders from academia, industry and policy so as to validate the observations, interpret their possible meaning and opt for actions that might favorably influence the future. Registration is still open.

In the context of convergence and innovation, the 21st Future Network and MobileSummit will address the challenges of building the Future Internet Infrastructures, based on mobile, wireless and fixed broadband communications technologies. High-quality scientific papers (up to 8 pages) and proposals for Workshop topics are invited for online submission from 9 November until 9 December 2011.
