- Social media gives helping hand to fall-prone elderly
-
(3 September 2012) A lot of older people wear alarm systems that contact emergency services directly if they suffer a fall. In that situation the person is often in pain and maybe in shock, so if the alarm is sent to many, help can get there quicker. Researchers are therefore working on a way to connect fall alarms to social media. FARSEEING is an EU-funded project, bringing together 11 partners to work on falls in older people and cost savings in this area. Based on the data collected so far the researchers say it is possible to predict a person's next fall with greater accuracy and therefore warn them to sit or lie down when they could be in danger. The team is now also working on a prototype social network that can help raise the alarm in such situations, instead of sending an alert only to the formal care services.

- Using the European Social Cohesion Funds - 1.2 Million Euros allocated to Integrated Care and early discharge in Malta
-
(28 August 2012) The Maltese Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) proposed project on early discharge (with the objective at reducing the number of patients in the corridors of Mater Dei Hospital) has been approved. As such, the EU is ready to fund Malta 1.2 million euros from the European and Structural Cohesion Funds (ESF) for this project, which aims at: implementing integrated care systems promoting continuity of care based on proactive and personalised community/home-based care; improving the health status and quality of life of the targeted population; and supporting the long-term sustainability and efficiency of the healthcare system in the region targeted. Such project has already been adopted by five European countries and MUMN is in contact with other European countries (namely Spain and Greece) who like Malta, are applying to such project. MUMN is a member of the European Federation of Nurses Associations (EFN), itself a member of the steering group of the European Innovative Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing, the committee that drafted the Strategic Implementation Plan of the Partnership. The EFN has been advocating for the use of Structural Cohesion Funds (SCF) to advance nursing and healthcare systems. The EFN General Secretary stated that "Malta puts now flesh on the bones! As such the European Innovative Partnership starts getting a meaning for the people working in the field. Nevertheless, this is just the start of a challenging multidisciplinary process."

- Now open for registration: Goldenworkers workshop: ICTs for the Employment of Older Workers: Towards an European Road Map
-
2 October 2012 Rome, Italy
Changes in the demographic profile in the EU countries will also impact on labour market by posing challenges that need to be tackled namely: adjusting the economy and workplaces to an ageing labour market, labour shortages as the numbers of working age persons decreases, need for increased numbers of trained healthcare professionals, potential intergenerational conflicts etc. As Commissioner Andor stated at the recent First Conference on European Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing, the European Commission set "an ambitious employment target under the Europe 2020 strategy as well as the European Employment Strategy, namely to reach an employment rate of 75% for the population group aged 20 to 65. This target will be achieved only if an increasing proportion of older people is "active and healthy aging" and is encouraged to remain active to work longer and retiring later by engaging in volunteer work after retirement and by leading healthy and autonomous lives". ICT can support the achievement of the above target as it can provide older workers with unique opportunities and respond to their needs for being active, socially included and healthy. The Goldenworkers project has identified the gap analysis between the ageing at work needs and current technological solutions already available on the market and those available in the close future. A Roadmap has been developed in order to identify the main research themes for ICT for Ageing at Work Europe should invest most in the near future. During the workshop the main building blocks of the Research Roadmap for ICT and Ageing at work will be discussed with key experts from policy, academia, industry sectors.

-
16 August 2012
According to a study released in May by the European Commission's Joint Research Center, Denmark – along with England and Scotland – is seen as a pioneer in the use of telemedicine in standard patient treatments. The study further pointed out that the future success of telemedicine and telehealth programs depends on a number of factors, including funding for mainstreaming, an integrated governance model, stakeholder engagement and a strong set of legal and clinical standards. Denmark's decision to base their telehealth system on Continua Guidelines underscores the importance of using industry standards from the start.

- Summary of the 1st meeting of the European Digital Champions
-
11 September 2012
On Monday 25 June, 14 Digital Champions met for the first time in Brussels. The meeting was chaired by Vice-President Neelie Kroes. They heard from Martha Lane Fox, the UK Digital Champion, about her work since her appointment in 2009 and how she is working with government, civil society and the private sector to get British citizens and businesses on line. Neelie Kroes wrote on her blog about the meeting: "It was a real mix of talents and experiences. And great to have so much energy in one room. And there are inspiring initiatives, and inspiring experiences people already brought to the table. For those of you whose governments haven't yet appointed one – make sure you let your governments know what they're missing out on, and feel free to suggest them some names!" Following Martha's presentation, the Digital Champions discussed how they were going to contribute to the growth and job agenda in their own countries. They were able to share experiences and develop common priorities, as well as explain how they were organising themselves to meet the Digital Agenda opportunities in their own countries. Until now, 17 countries appointed their Digital Champions.
