Call for Chapters: Beyond Silos – The why and how of integrated eCare

(14 September 2012) The book is a spin-off of the "Beyond Silos" activities undertaken by the EU- funded INDEPENDENT (ICT Enabled Service Integration for Independent Living). The book will take stock of what already exists in the area of integrated eCare, i.e. the joint provision of healthcare, social care and third sector services (services provided by charities, voluntary organizations etc.) enabled by ICT. It will thus provide a compendium of knowledge available in the field of integrated eCare and will give people active in the field the opportunity to learn from the knowledge gained and the experiences made so far. The overall aim is to produce a collection of knowledge that provides relevant insights to be used by health and social care professionals and providers, third sector organisations, researchers and decision makers engaging in integrated eCare.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT
EU Parliament event of the AAL Joint Programme: "2014-2020- Managing an aged society while promoting sustainable and smart businesses: The future strategy of the AAL Joint Programme."

16 October 2012

The Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme (AAL JP) is organizing in collaboration with Members of the European Parliament Heinze Becker, and Lambert Van Nistelroy an event with two main goals: firstly to share the outcomes of the AAL JP following five years of stimulating innovation in the field of ICT for ageing, resulting in SMEs and other organizations building new supply chains and collaborations. Secondly, to illustrate the advantages of a follow-up Joint Programme across Europe for the period 2014-2020 and explore how we could stimulate economic growth whilst improving the quality of life of EU citizens. The most important achievement of the AAL JP so far has been the supply chains that have been built and consolidated across this emerging sector, connecting SMEs and other organisations with new suppliers and customers. The AAL JP is well positioned to drive opportunities for economic growth across Europe that the demographic shift represents and has had other significant achievements. Building on the extensive work and joint efforts to date which have established this success story, the AALA is working to develop a follow-up for the joint programme – beyond 2013. All future activities will take account of the evolution of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP AHA) and Horizon 2020.

Achieving a society for all ages: a shared responsibility... Older citizens are ready to help! AGE Platform 's press release

"Over the last days, we have talked a lot about older people's rights but AGE members feel that older people also have responsibilities and duties. They are ready to bring their fair contribution to the development of solutions that will ensure a better future for all generations", started Anne-Sophie Parent, Secretary General of AGE Platform Europe at the UNECE Ministerial Conference 'Ensuring a society for all ages: promoting quality of life and active ageing' held in Vienna on 19-20 September. European countries are going through a very severe economic, financial and social crisis. Combined with rapid demographic ageing, this creates the greatest challenge the EU has ever faced. Inequalities have increased dramatically in recent years and drastic cuts are being introduced in social services affecting older people. "Public authorities, civil society organisations and researchers must work hand in hand and cross-border to find ways of developing age-friendly environments that will support an optimal use of Europe's human capital and limited resources. We feel collectively responsible to ensure a decent future for today's and future generations and our members are committed to encourage senior citizens to invest their savings in initiatives that will create jobs for younger people, will help create a society for all ages and will benefit all generations", added Mrs Parent. In the framework of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP AHA), AGE is leading a coalition calling for a European Covenant on Demographic Change, similar to the existing Covenant on climate change, to support the scaling up of evidence based successful solutions that could help us achieve a society for all ages across the EU.

Press release of the AGE platform on Alzheimer's day (21 September)

With the number of people with dementia increasing with the ageing of the population and expected to reach 15 million by 2050, creating environments that empower older people and people with dementia to lead independent lives and take an active part in society for longer must become a priority for EU decision-makers. This requires a holistic approach to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, beyond medical treatment, and better coordination between all relevant stakeholders, in order to improve the quality of life and dignity of patients and their families. It is essential to create an environment that favours the inclusion of people with dementia and their relatives in their communities e.g. by tackling the stigma attached to these diseases, favouring as much as possible community-based care, by supporting families and carers, adapting staff training and housing equipment and design, training bus drivers, salespersons, the police and other members of the public on how to deal with a person with Alzheimer's, etc. Many initiatives already exist across the EU, which could inspire further action in other Member States. For example, dementia-friendly housing adaptations such as bright open spaces, calming colours and a relaxing atmosphere impact positively on everyone and create living spaces that are better adapted to the needs of all age groups (universal design). This is why, in the framework of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing, AGE Platform Europe and Alzheimer Europe join forces to call for the launch of a European Covenant of local and regional authorities on demographic change, whose objective will be to promote age and Alzheimer-friendly environments across the EU.
