Institution: University of the West of Scotland
Dept/School/Faculty: School of Computing
PhD Supervisor: Dr Q Wang
Co-Supervisor: Dr J Calero
Application Deadline: Friday, May 16, 2014
Funding Availability: [PhD Funding Status] Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

Disadvantaged wireless networks commonly feature unreliable connectivity, low bandwidth, variable throughput, high delays and jitters, and constrained energy. Consequently, such networks suffer from frequent communication disruptions and compromised service quality. These networks are typically built upon mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks, satellite links etc. and deployed in areas where terrestrial infrastructure is non-existing or limited, such as disaster-hit areas and military fields.

Meanwhile, visual applications such as video streaming are highly desired in disadvantaged wireless networks for collecting, analysing and reacting to the current and developing situation from the area of interest, which can be crucial for successful mission accomplishments. However, visual applications are resource demanding and thus pose huge challenges to disadvantaged wireless networks.

This project aims to investigate innovative technologies to improve the performance of visual applications in disadvantaged wireless networks. A testing and R&D platform of disadvantaged networks and visual applications will be established, based on a combination of simulation/emulation and real network equipment and servers. The default performance of the state-of-the-art visual applications will be benchmarked and analysed, and then enhancements in service algorithms and/or network protocols will be designed, implemented and evaluated.

The successful applicant will carry out the project within the AVCN Research Centre (http://www.uws.ac.uk/avcn), which has established expertise in the proposed research areas. The supervisors have been recently involved in a number of funded national or international projects, and the outcomes of their research have been disseminated through numerous prestigious international publications. The successful applicant should be proficient in software simulation and programming, and preferably have good knowledge of networking technologies.

Funding Notes:

  • UWS is an inspiring, vibrant place to study with a growing research community; an important aspect of which is its outstanding and committed research students.
  • Successful candidates will receive a £13, 863 annual stipend payable for three years and payment of tuition fees (current value £3900).
  • This studentship is open to Home/EU candidates with a first degree in a relevant discipline. Non-EU students can apply, but will not receive the stipend and will be required to pay fees.
  • The deadline date for applications is 16th May 2014. Candidates must be available to commence their studies in October 2014.
