- First Pan-European VERITAS Workshop and User Forum
-
29 November 2010 - 30 November 2010 Prague, Czech Republic
Ensuring that all products developed in the car, home, work, healthcare and entertainment industry are accessible and designed for all, lies at the core of the VERITAS project (FP7). Through the development of virtual user models that can be inserted in simulation environments, any design elements that cause barriers for the beneficiaries (people with disabilities and older people) can be detected at the very beginning, thus allowing the designers to improve their initial design and make it inclusive. The User Forum aims to bring together on the one hand the developers and designers, and on the other hand the beneficiaries of the developed products and services.

8 November 2010
The increase of life expectancy in western societies has been accompanied by a similar increase of chronic diseases. In contrast to the not so distant past, people now live longer, coping with numerous afflictions (mostly related to old age). Today, healthcare needs to address the fact that chronic disease is becoming more prevalent and needs attention from widely distributed experts and organisations, each specializing in a narrow field and addressing only a small part of the health issues patients are facing. The result of this combination of geographically dispersion and longer duration of treatment is that patients need to follow complicated routes from hospitals to specialists and back, elevating the importance of information sharing and availability. - Interoperability Challenges in the Health Management of Patients with Implantable Defibrillators
-
8 November 2010
Patient empowerment frameworks engage citizens in their healthcare. Heart patients undergo implantation of Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs) that support remote monitoring hoping to live a longer healthier life. Electronic Health Records (EHR), remote device monitoring, and lifestyle data can supply patient context to computerized guidelines so that health events are timely assessed and effectively treated, before they become life-threatening. In this way, lives may be saved, health care resources be optimized, and hospital visits be reduced saving time, hassle, and money. iCARDEA aims to provide health professionals with such an adaptive care planner offering decision support through semi-automated clinical guidelines integrating data from CIEDs, EHRs and Personal Health Records (PHRs). The enabling standards and interoperability initiatives are presented underlining barriers that need to be overcome, before such eHealth innovations become widely adopted.

- The role of Network Operators in mHealth
-
8 November 2010
mHealth is a term that refers to the provision of medical services through the use of portable devices with the capability to create, store, retrieve, and transmit data via mobile communications. In technical terms, small devices are used to monitor patient-related data and actively communicate with a central information system; in most cases, communication takes place either over a mobile telephony or fixed line network (e.g. ADSL) coupled with WiFi. Standing at the crossroads of eHealth, Mobile Devices and Wide Area Networks (WANs), mHealth has found itself in the middle of an explosive growth that these sectors have experienced in the last few years and which is continuing strong, even in the midst of the global recession.

- Unique aspects of eHealth procurement
-
8 November 2010
One of the most striking similarities among diverse business sectors is their unwavering belief in their uniqueness. This attitude is particularly visible to professionals that happen to work in cross-section projects and thus have the opportunity to come into contact with representatives from different areas. Procurement is a good example of such a cross-section area, with different businesses claiming a necessity for completely different processes for their sector. However, experience shows that in most cases such differences are only perceived rather than real; in fact, from the perspective of procurement, businesses have more in common than not.
