- Commission launches public consultation on future funding to boost EU competitiveness and innovation

(11 November 2010) The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the successor to the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme 2007-2013 (CIP). The CIP is the main EU budgetary instrument targeting competitiveness outside the research and skills areas. Its main priorities are SMEs, access to finance, innovation (including eco-innovation), take-up and use of information and communication technologies (ICT), energy efficiency and renewables. Through the consultation, the public is invited to have its say on what the priorities of future competitiveness and innovation EU funding should be. The consultation will remain open until 4 February 2011.

- Digital Agenda: consultation reveals near consensus on importance of preserving open internet

(9 November 2010) There is a near consensus on the importance of preserving the openness of the internet, according to the results of a public consultation launched on 30th June by the European Commission on the open internet and net neutrality. A total of 318 stakeholders at every level of the value chain provided input to the consultation. These included BEREC, the body of European Regulators of Electronic Communications, operators, internet service providers, Member States' authorities, consumer and civil society organisations as well as individuals. The consultation did not reveal a widespread call for further EU legislation, but there is an expectation that additional guidance may be needed in the future. Discussions will continue on 11th November at the "Net neutrality summit" at which the Commission and the European Parliament will discuss a forthcoming Commission report on net neutrality.

ACTMOST is a consortium of 14 high-tech research laboratories from 6 European member states that have joined forces to become a "one-stop-shop" solutions provider for micro-photonic technologies. It aims to provide European companies with timely, cost-effective, and investment-free access to professional, cutting-edge micro-photonic technologies and knowledge to support the development of new products. During this half day workshop, companies can learn more about the different opportunities and added value that ACTMOST can provide them. Participation to the workshop is free and open to all European companies interested in product innovation with micro-photonics.

- FET11 - The European Future Technologies Conference and Exhibition

FET11 is a European forum dedicated to frontier research in future and emerging information technologies. The event will give an opportunity to take an early look at what are likely to become tomorrow's science successes and groundbreaking technologies based on ICT-led research. During the event, diverse communities will meet to discuss visionary, high-risk research in a broad range of scientific fields and debate on technologies which will emerge at their crossroads - and on their societal impact. An exhibition is organised in parallel. Expected participants include scientists, policy makers, European researchers, industry representatives and journalists. The event is co-organised by the European Commission, ERCIM (the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics) and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, under the auspices of the Hungarian Presidency of the European Union.

In preparation of the upcoming FP7 Call on this objective, the European Commission is organising this Information and Networking day. A first one will be held in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) on 22 November 2010. The purpose of the event is to inform and assist prospective proposers, especially SME, preparing project proposals, to facilitate sharing of ideas and experiences. It will give participants the chance to network, to find partners for their projects and get feedback on proposed ideas from officials of the European Commission.

Ensuring that all products developed in the car, home, work, healthcare and entertainment industry are accessible and designed for all, lies at the core of the VERITAS project (FP7). Through the development of virtual user models that can be inserted in simulation environments, any design elements that cause barriers for the beneficiaries (people with disabilities and older people) can be detected at the very beginning, thus allowing the designers to improve their initial design and make it inclusive. The User Forum aims to bring together on the one hand the developers and designers, and on the other hand the beneficiaries of the developed products and services.

The European Commission has launched in 2009 a Study on "Towards a Future Internet: Interrelations between Technological, Social and Economic Aspects". Building on an online survey and several multidisciplinary workshops held in Brussels, at MIT in Boston and in Tokyo, the final findings, touching on the infrastructure, policy and regulatory aspects of the Future Internet and their societal and economic impact, will be presented and discussed during this workshop. Registration is free of charge but compulsory.

While the issue of Cognitive Radio has been put on the agenda of the upcoming 2012 World Radio Conference of the ITU, research into this novel paradigm for mobile communications is slowly but steadily moving in the direction of market introduction. This third Workshop aims to discuss policy, regulation and market issues surrounding Cognitive Radio together with academics, regulators and business strategists, thereby providing a forum for interesting debates and discussions. It is organised by the Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology (IBBT, Belgium) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA). Participation to the workshop is free of charge, but prior registration is required.

It will address all the challenges of building the Future Internet, which will be based on mobile, wireless and fixed broadband communications infrastructures. The Summit showcases European research in the field, in particular from the EU Future Networks projects, and positions it within the multiplicity of related initiatives supported in other regions of the world. The scientific programme is based on an open Call for Papers, with Research, Technical, Visionary or Techno-Economic Scenarios in focus (deadline : 10 December 2010)

- Workshop: Making a profit from Technology - Impact assessment for the ageing population

Experience with assisted and independent living or active ageing technology and services is growing, business interest in the silver economy is rising rapidly and case studies show significant potential cost savings. However, the evidence of quality of life improvement, new business, and cost effectiveness is still too patchy, fragmented and insufficiently comparable. More convincing business models and strategies are also needed for assistive and independent living technologies to become main stream. This workshop, hosted by the London School of Economics, will address the current state of relevant technologies, products and services in the field of assisted and independent living in Europe and investigate the key elements needed for large scale uptake of innovative solutions for the benefit and welfare of the citizens, to increase efficiency of care systems and to create new markets for industry.

Everyone is invited to join the association and to participate in its activities.

(8 November 2010) The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Europe has launched the nomination for the HIMSS Europe Award for eHealth Leadership, which recognises an individual who has demonstrated significant leadership in promoting the use of information technology in healthcare in Europe. The Award will be presented at the World of Health IT conference during the eHealth week (Budapest, Hungary, 10-13 May 2011). Deadline for submission of nominations is Monday 20 December 2010.

The brain-computer interface (BCI) technology uses brain signals to directly drive external devices. Over the last decade, EEG-based BCIs have begun to provide basic communication and motor control abilities to people with severe motor disabilities, thus offering a unique opportunity to improve their quality of life. In spite of the remarkable advancement in computing capabilities (signal acquisition and processing, translation algorithms...), a large gap still exists between the promises of the neural engineering achievements and the clinical application reality in terms of BCIs as a daily use assisted device and as add-on intervention in the rehabilitation protocols. The goal of this workshop is to explore current and future scenarios in this field.
