Electronic Infrastructure for Thalassaemia Research Network

(15 January 2010)ITHANET is a Euro-Mediterranean network of research centres conducting molecular and clinical research of thalassaemia and related haemoglobinopathies. As a result of the FP6 ITHANET project, patients will find background knowledge on haemoglobinopathies and a resource for the identification of thalassaemia centres. Moreover, they will benefit from more effective drugs owing to accelerated multi-centre research, with the use of shared databases and support for collaborative tools and large-scale computing infrastructures. Overall, the project will allow better treatment results, because of optimised treatment regimens, and through the exchange of methods and improved screening programmes, including population screening, gene counselling and prenatal diagnosis, will decrease the number of those in need of care and free up resources for disease prevention.

Epilepsiae Case Study

(8 January 2010)Epilepsy is the most common serious brain disorder in every country, and probably the most universal of all medical disorders. In Europe six million people currently have epilepsy and fifteen million will have epilepsy at some time of their lives. The project intends to develop an intelligent alarm system, transportable by the patient, measuring the brain dynamical activity, capable of predicting the seizures; allowing the patient to assess the risk of his actual situation and improving his safety.

Virtual liver set to improve surgery outcomes

12 January 2010

European researchers have developed a virtual liver that promises to improve the prospects of recovery for patients with diseases such as liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver. The initial work was carried out in the framework of the EUREKA project Odysseus. EUREKA promotes international, market-oriented research. The virtual liver is now being developed further in the EU-funded PASSPORT ('Patient specific simulation and preoperative realistic training for liver surgery') project. PASSPORT is funded to the tune of EUR 3.6 million under the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Theme of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). 'Thanks to the 3D modelling, the future of liver surgery has gained more precision through accurate definition of the liver's blood vessels,' commented Professor Luc Soler of the Institut de Recherche contre les Cancers de l'Appareil Digestif (IRCAD) in France.
