REMINDER: eHealth Week 2012 - World of Health IT Call for Papers - deadline 01/09/2011

7 May 2012 - 9 May 2012 Copenhagen, Denmark

The WoHIT 2012 Programme Advisory Committee has opened the Call for Papers. New for 2012, submissions must specifically address one of the 7 session themes selected. Successful submissions will closely address the selected session's theme and provide practical information to assist European healthcare professionals in the betterment of healthcare through the effective use of information technology. Session abstracts submitted should not exceed 200 words and should be concise, noting the achievement, resulting benefits and the speakers who can effectively deliver the presentation. More information on the website.

NEWS ARTICLE
EU-funded scientists develop new approaches to fight Alzheimer's

(8 July 2011) Earlier diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is one step closer thanks to a team of EU-funded researchers that has developed novel approaches for measuring biomarkers for diagnostics, and a sophisticated system for integrating the information analytically. The system, which offers researchers an objective method for measuring the patient's state, is an outcome of the PREDICTAD ('From patient data to personalised healthcare in Alzheimer's disease') project, which is backed with EUR 2.89 million under the 'Information and communication technologies' (ICT) Theme of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Innovative policies to support healthy, active and dignified ageing and raise the effectiveness and efficiency of spending on social, health and long-term care services and benefits

(Deadline: 26/09/2011) This call is financed by the PROGRESS programme. It seeks to promote the sustainability and quality of health and long-term care provision for the elderly through healthy and active ageing. The objectives of this call for proposals are to provide financial support to projects aimed at designing better policies for healthy, active and dignified ageing in the countries participating in PROGRESS. Projects may focus on different stages of policy development ranging from the identification of potential benefits of healthy and active ageing for sustainable social protection and social cohesion in ageing societies to the design of new policies, their implementation and evaluation. Particular attention should be paid to specifically vulnerable social groups and to parts of the EU where poor health is most prevalent (as assessed by measures such as healthy life expectancy) and where many people are at risk of not receiving appropriate care for a life in dignity. NEWS ARTICLE
REMINDER: Innovation Convention 2011 - call for exhibitors

(28 July 2011) On 5-6 December 2011, the European Commission is holding its first Innovation Convention following the adoption of the Innovation Union Flagship initiative in October 2010. This major event will gather more than 1200 participants involved in the innovation chain, including high-level policy makers, leading CEOs, deans of universities and research centres, bankers, venture capitalists, top researchers and innovators. This call for exhibition proposals is open to any organisation involved in a project funded by the EU's Framework programmes for Research (FP) or the EU's Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP). The project should have attained a certain level of maturity (for example be in a phase where it can be developed further thanks to patenting, venture capital etc). More importantly, it should be able to demonstrate some results with concrete examples. The NEW deadline for submission of exhibition proposals is 7 September 2011

This course is intended to deal with practical know-how knowledge and is designed for officials and experts especially from the EU12 and EU15 MS with Convergence Regions who represent SF Managing Authorities at national and regional levels, national and regional MoH, regional and local health authorities, regional governments, NGOs, regional development agencies who are involved in managing, accessing and using Structural Funds (SF) in the current period and planning for the 2014-2020 period. eChallenges e2011 Conference & Exhibition, Florence, 26 - 28 October

The eChallenges e-2011 Conference will take place in Florence, Italy on 26-28 October 2011. This is the twenty-first in a series of Annual Conferences supported by the European Commission and hosted by national governments, which regularly attracts over 600 delegates from leading commercial, government and research organisations around the world to share knowledge and experience, lessons learnt, good practice and innovation. The 3-day programme features an invigorating mix of business and government case studies, technical and policy papers and interactive workshops. As well as opening and closing plenary sessions, delegates may participate in over 50 thematically focused parallel session featuring different aspects of Networked Enterprise, eGovernment, Living Labs & Smart Cities, eHealth, Intelligent Content, Technology Enhanced Learning, eInfrastructures and Security and Identity Management. All participants should complete registration prior to the event. Early bird delegate registration is available up to 31 July. The eChallenges e-2011 Exhibition will showcase research results and applications through technology demonstrations, whether funded commercially, or national, regional or European level. This very rich newsletter is providing, among others, information on new Virtual Physiological Human Projects, the VPH Institute, the ARGOS project: toward a transatlantic policy for the long-term sustainability of the VPH Infostructure, the VPH Training in Action: MeDDiCA, VPH NoE News FP7 Health - Orientation Paper with Indicative List of Topics, etc. It also focuses on the PredictAD project that deals with Alzheimer's disease and features a comprehensive interview with I. Scientists find brain waves can predict epileptic seizures

Scientists from the Bernstein Center at the University in Freiburg in Germany have taken a step forward in the quest to predict epileptic seizures by monitoring the pre-seizure changes in sufferers' brains. The research study was funded in part by the EPILEPSIAE ('Evolving platform for improving living expectation of patients suffering from Ictal events') project, which received nearly EUR 3 million under the 'Information and communication technologies' (ICT) Theme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The research was recently published in the journal Epilepsia.
