Commission suspends Latvian proposal to uphold excessive level of wholesale rates for fixed telephony and starts an in-depth review

(13 August 2012) The European Commission has expressed serious doubts about a new proposal from the Latvian telecoms regulator (SPRK) regarding fixed termination rates which would negatively affect consumers in Latvia. Termination rates are the rates telecoms networks charge each other to deliver calls between networks, and each operator has market power over access to customers on its own network. These costs are ultimately included in call prices paid by consumers and businesses.

(13 August 2012) The European Commission has ruled that the Czech telecoms regulator (CTU) must withdraw its plans to include wholesale broadband services based on cable and Wi-Fi platforms into its definition of the wholesale broadband access product market.

PRESS RELEASE
Microcopters and ground robots used to assess the damage of earthquake-hit Italian churches

(9 August 2012) In late July the EU-funded project NIFTi successfully deployed a team of flying and ground-based robots in Mirandola, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, upon the official request by the Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian national rescue organization in charge of disaster response and recovery. The NIFTi team was tasked to assess the damage to local churches only 20 kilometres away from the epicentre of the series of earthquakes that hit the region in May and June 2012. When the NIFTi team started their mission, the inner city of Mirandola was still sealed off by the military and nobody could access the area without authorisation. The conditions were very dangerous, and two fire fighters had been killed there before by a collapsing roof. The robots entered badly damaged buildings, scanned the area and produced 3D map reconstructions and high-resolution videos to report on structural damage to ceilings, arches and aisles in the largely destroyed churches, which date back to the 13th and 15th centuries, and on the state of cultural artefacts such as paintings, decorations, tombs and altars.

BROCHURE
The EU Contribution to Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations

10 August 2012

The "EU Contribution to Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations" is a comprehensive document which sets out what the European Union is doing to encourage active ageing. Released within the frame of the European Year 2012, the 24-page brochure presents the EU's efforts regarding the active ageing agenda, showing that it is a strong partner in this regard. The main tools to support active ageing are in the hands of policymakers in the Member States. However, the EU can mobilise a wide range of policy instruments to support national governments and other stakeholders in their efforts. Hence, the brochure covers existing measures at EU level, but also looks at others that are still being discussed, such as legislation in the pipeline and proposals for funding programmes in the new 2014-20 budget cycle. The overall aim is to inspire more determined efforts in all Member States to promote active ageing, thereby ensuring that solidarity between generations can withstand the test of population ageing. The European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012 provides an opportunity to think about what we can do to make active ageing a reality and to commit to new initiatives in the years to come.
