PhD Position in Supercritical Water Oxidation for Clinical Waste Treatment Bushra Al-Duri

Background

Medical or clinical wastes have always required extreme measures in handling, treatment and disposal due to their complex composition, and their infectious and hazardous nature. The most common practice for medical waste destruction is incineration; by which solid wastes are ?burnt? at nearly 1100°C, inevitably emitting deadly gases and piles of solid residues (ash). Other methods include microwaves and autoclaves, where disinfection and sterilisation respectively take place, but no destruction is achieved. All of the above methods are pricey, and leave solid residues that will have to be handled. Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) is the next generation to incineration; a process that is characterised by zero toxic emissions and minimal solid residues, among other advantages. This project represents the first steps of a new idea within the SCW technology

The Project

The PhD Scholarships are for the design and operation of a supercritical water oxidation laboratory scale process for the abatement of chemically stable hazardous clinical waste. The process will consist of pretreatment then oxidation of solid and liquid the feedstock in a continuous process, under hydrothermal conditions (from sub- to supercritical). The PhD programmes will run in parallel and cover complementary aspects of addressing the milestones required to bring the technology to full smooth operation.

The projects? work will consist of the following parts:
  1. Design calculations of the individual process units, based on first principles.
  2. Simulation work for the integration (or coupling) of units.
  3. Construction of the unit: carried out by manufacturers as advised by the researchers and Industrial collaborators on board.
  4. Experimental programme using compounds that ?represent? clinical waste.
  5. Tests on real waste.

The projects will be under Al-Duri?s supervision, together with prominent high- pressure equipment Industrial Leaders and the Sponsors? Technical Advisor. The programmes are to start as soon as possible. The funding covers UK or EU tuition fees, stipends and bench fees.

The successful candidates must have a minimum 2:1 M. Eng or B Eng Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, with particular interest in heat transfer, energy calculations, reactions kinetics and modelling. They must have high numeracy, laboratory skills and dedication. Importantly, they must be driven and highly motivated by challenges, and interested in breaking new boundaries.
