Britain 'needs smart living plan for disabled and older people', say experts

(21 June 2010)Experts working across the field of disabled and older people have called for a national overall coherent plan to develop fully integrated systems and services which meet their needs. Such an urgent need was expressed by speakers addressing some 80 delegates at a seminar held at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills , London, on June 15, and organised by the charity PhoneAbility in collaboration with BIS. The delegates, from a wide range of businesses and services, were told that although there were many excellent pilot schemes for providing various components of such smart living systems and services there was a serious lack of an overall plan. The roles of many sectors needed to be taken into account including architecture, professional engineering, building, medicine, energy, communications, transport and organisations providing caring resources and bodies representing disabled and older people. Without such a plan this fragmentary situation would worsen year by year for the 10 million Britons over the age of 65 (of whom five million are disabled) and for the seven million disabled people of working age.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Call for proposals for social experimentation

(Deadline: 31/08/2010) The European Commission has published under PROGRESS, the EU's employment and social solidarity programme, a Call for Proposals that seeks to promote social experimentation as a source of innovation in the social policies falling within the open method of coordination applied to social protection and social inclusion (the social OMC) in the European Union. Social experiments are intended to: −Provide innovative answers to social needs; −Initially be undertaken on a small scale owing to existing uncertainty as to their effects; −Be implemented in conditions which ensure the possibility of measuring their effects; −Be repeated on a wider scale if the results prove convincing. Selected projects should contribute to developing and testing socially innovative approaches to EU policy priorities in the context of the social OMC such as active inclusion, housing exclusion and homelessness, child poverty and social inclusion of migrants. Particular attention will be paid to projects with a focus on the social inclusion of young people.

Assisted living technologies for older and disabled people in 2030

15 June 2010

Improvements in healthcare mean that people are living longer, and in better health, than ever before. There is expected to be a dramatic shift in the UK's demography towards older people. There is the potential for significant social, cultural and economic benefits if older or disabled people are empowered to remain an active part of society. Communications technology is likely to play an important role in enabling this positive outcome. Ofcom has commissioned this study to develop future scenarios based on the services required to promote social and economic inclusion of older and disabled people over the coming 20-year period. From these scenarios, the study identifies the key technological developments required, including a detailed discussion of drivers for or barriers to change, and a quantification of the technologies' impact on wired and wireless networks.
