Neelie Kroes to outline the EU's actions on innovation in digital solutions to help the elderly

(6 September 2010)European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, will outline Europe's actions and next steps for Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to help the elderly at a forum in Odense, Denmark, on 15 September 2010. This is one of the key objectives of the Digital Agenda for Europe, the European Commission's action plan to maximise the benefits of ICTs for job creation, sustainability and social inclusion. Helping the elderly stay independent for longer and lead an active, high-quality life is one of the biggest challenges for Europe. The EU's 60-plus population is increasing by about 2 million a year and our 80-plus population is expected to double by 2020. With more retired people and less workers in the care sector, the pressure is on to find effective solutions to support elderly people and their community, to increase the efficiency of the care systems and to promote a flourishing EU industry for independent and active "ageing" products and services.

2012 to be the European Year for Active Ageing

(7 September 2010)The European Commission has proposed on 6 September 2010 that 2012 be designated as the "European Year for Active Ageing". The initiative aims to help create better job opportunities and working conditions for the growing numbers of older people in Europe, help them take an active role in society and encourage healthy ageing. It comes as Europe's policymakers grapple with a steadily ageing population and its impacts on public services and finances. The European Parliament and Council are expected to endorse the initiative by the beginning of next year.

Digital Agenda: Commission consults on re-use of public sector data

(9 September 2010)The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the EU Directive on the re-use of public sector information (PSI). PSI covers all sorts of data generated by public sector bodies - e.g. maps, meteorological, legal, traffic, financial and economic information - that can be re-used by anyone else in innovative products such as car navigation systems, weather forecasts, and travel information applications ("apps") that can be downloaded on smart phones. Public data that is reused (for free or for a fee) generates an estimated market turnover of at least € 27 billion in the EU every year, according to a 2006 study. Contributions to this consultation will feed into the review of the PSI Directive, part of the Digital Agenda for Europe that aims to contribute to the EU goals of increasing competitiveness, innovation and job creation. The consultation will run until 30 November 2010.
