Workshop on barrier-free digital television

28 October 2010 European Parliament, Brussels

As Europe is passing from analogue television to digital broadcasting, offering inclusive, barrier-free watching experience is essential for participation of all while it is also becoming technically possible. At the same time it turns out that solutions, which were initially designed to enable hard of hearing or sight impaired people to gain access to information, entertainment, services through TV, are also useful for older people with age related difficulties, migrant or minority communities or persons with low literacy. Services like subtitles are also useful for language learning. Audio description, a voice-over describing the scene on the screen, is welcomed by people who want to 'listen' to their favourite program in the background while doing something else. Nevertheless, the challenges in delivering an inclusive, barrier-free digital television remain manifold – whether for broadcasters, equipment manufacturers or policy makers.

National Telecare & Telehealth Conference 2010

15 November 2010 - 17 November 2010 London, UK

"Technology is part of all our lives. The 'hole-in-the-wall' machine, on-line books, booking and holidays and web-cams for chats with family and friends. Why not for healthcare? The truth is there are some spectacular examples of what tele-care and health can achieve; personal, immediate, reassuring and value for money care. We will hear about them at this pivotal conference and have take-home ideas, facts and information to put into action. "This is an idea and a technology whose time has come. Politicians, strategists, planners and commentators know and the public are coming to expect it. This is the time."

Technology for people living with dementia

5 October 2010

Alzheimer Europe reports that at least 5.7 million Europeans, aged between 40 and 80, have Parkinson's disease or dementia. With an aging population, an estimated 10 million new cases of Parkinson's and dementia is expected within the next 40 years. Care is provided by nursing homes and specialised centres to 70% of advanced dementia patients. So today, European researchers are tackling the problem of how people with these diseases can keep their independence and quality of life longer, while safely living in their own homes. The Rosetta project is funded under the Ambient Assisted Living Programme, the EU's R&D funding programme addressing demographic ageing in Europe.
