Launch of eAccess+, the eAccessibility Network

(20 October 2010) The ICT Policy Support Programme funded Thematic Network eAccess+ will create a platform for collecting and providing guidance on how to use in practice the body of knowledge on eAccessibility. eAccess+ is a best-practice network too that will facilitate co-operation between the community of practitioners (found in research institutions and consultancies) and all the other stakeholders (policy makers, administrators in the public sector, technical staff in the private sector…). The purpose is to accelerate the take-up of e-accessibility specifications and technical solutions, and to contribute to a common approach at European level. The network will support the development of common guidelines and standards, and, where needed, will provide rationale for harmonised political and legal measures. Its main focus is web accessibility but it will address also digital TV and self-service terminals.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT
Workshop on ICT & Ageing: Announcing the European Initiative for an AAL Platform

16 November 2010 Passau, Germany

When the topic "AAL" comes up, everybody thinks first of fascinating technology that is unobtrusively integrated in "smart home environments" and supports people in their daily lives. This thinking is surely driven by the ongoing development of impressive services that was and is still provided by the AAL research community as well as the growing number of companies that bring this technology to market. In many projects - like MonAMI - that deal with the integration of such mainstreaming services and sensor systems into a common architecture, it quickly became clear that a very important aspect was not sufficiently considered: The need of a common platform for AAL systems. In the series of lectures "Platforms for AAL applications", this issue will be addressed. Many highly qualified experts dealing with the standardization of AAL platforms for many years, will present their experiences and answer questions to topics like "Why platforms are important to AAL", "What features should be in an AAL platform" and "Why mainstream and open source solutions are important in AAL".

21 September 2010

The report provides a public overview on the outcomes of the FP6 project HearCom (Hearing in the Communication Society) that was conducted from 1 September 2004 until 28 February 2009. One of the main achievements of the project has been the provision of advanced hearing screening tests by telephone and Internet. It was aimed at the harmonization of hearing diagnostic tests within Europe. For this, the concept of the Auditory Profile has been developed with several tests for various languages. The project also developed the HearCompanion tool, an online tool for supporting new hearing aid users in their hearing rehabilitation process.
