The Machine Learning Group of the Artificial Intelligence Center (University of Oviedo at Gijón, Spain) announces a new PhD position. The selected candidate will work on opinion mining, multi-label learning and quantification.

Description: A 4-years FPI Grant, two first years of grant and last two years of contract. FPI are grants that the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation gives to research groups for the development of PhDs by young researchers.

Project: The use of web-based services has increased dramatically in recent years, mainly boosted by the popularity of social networks and blogging services. As a consequence, the amount of data to be analyzed has also increased enormously. In this context, new research challenges come up and some of them can be addressed using Machine Learning techniques. The first goal of this project is to design new supervised learning methods to solve three types of problems:

1) applications whose examples are labeled by more than one class (multi-label learning),

2) problems in which the examples are opinions; the aim is to discover whether the author has a positive, negative or neutral opinion, and/or if he or she shows other kind of feelings (Opinion Mining or Sentiment Analysis), and

3) in some situations, the classification does not focus on predicting the true label or labels of a single example, but on estimating the number of cases that belong to each class; a relatively new learning task called quantification.

Although these problems seem unrelated, they are somehow linked. For instance, comments are usually labeled based on different criteria (type of opinion, degree of objectivity/subjectivity, etc..), and sometimes the claim is not whether an individual opinion is positive or negative, but the number of favorable/unfavorable opinions that can be found about a product or an event during a specific period of time. As part of this project we will try to study the connections among these learning problems.

Required academic degree: Master Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or Physics.

Other requirements:

Knowledge about Machine Learning

Fluent in English, both written and spoken

Good interpersonal and analytic skills

Salary (gross salary; approximate amounts): first two years of grant 1.150 euros/month, and the last two years of contract 1.175 euros/month (14 payments)
