Valentine's Day – time to hug your favourite robot?

(14 February 2012) On St. Valentine's Day, we want to be close to the ones we love. Researchers from Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK are testing whether one day that special person in our life could be a robot. Experiments have shown that children, for example, can become extremely attached to a robot playmate, but can the robot in turn can develop a bond with a human being? Could we one day expect robots to develop a behaviour that resembles human attachment? That is the question being explored in the ALIZ-E project

Public consultation on the accessibility of goods and services in the European market - deadline is 29 February

(14 February 2012) The Commission is reflecting on the development of a European Accessibility Act containing measures to improve the accessibility of goods and services in the European market. This consultation is part of the preparatory data collection that will underpin the assessment of the impact of the measures. The consultation – itself fully accessible –is aimed at gathering views from businesses, people with disabilities and the general public and will remain open until 29 February 2012.

Together we can – talking e-Health with Scotland's Nicola Sturgeon

(7 February 2012) Did you know that Scotland, with just 5 million people, has already deployed telecare and telehealth to more than 40.000 citizens? Early February Neelie Kroes met Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish Deputy First Minister responsible for Health and Wellbeing. They discussed the great importance of investing in ICT solutions so people can stay active and healthy for longer, and to promote eHealth – something where Scotland is a forerunner in Europe.

Call for participation to the AAL 7th Companion Robotic Institute workshop, 9th March 2012

(13 February 2012) The CompanionAble Consortium is inviting papers and presentations for the AAL 7th Companion Robotic Institute (CRI) workshop to take place in Brussels on the 9th of March. The workshop will cover topics relating to AAL User-Centred Companion Robotics Experimental Platforms; Supporting Socio-ethically Intelligent Assistive Technologies Adoption, including Human-Robot Interaction, emotion-awareness and responsiveness, Companion Robots Dynamic Usability Evaluation, AAL-Companion Robot secure semantic Interoperability, and, Multi-modal semantic-cognitive control of Companion Robots. Closing date for submissions is the 19th February 2012.

ICT Finance MarketPlace is an initiative to improve access to finance for innovative Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. The Venture Academy consists of a one-day, coaching event where experienced coaches from relevant industry areas will help SMEs pragmatically to develop their pitching skills towards potential investors. First annual meeting of the European Joint Action on Healthy Life Years

19 April 2012 in Paris

The first annual meeting of the European Joint Action on Healthy Life Years will be held on the topic of "Increasing Active Healthy Ageing: How can monitoring help achieve the EU goal?" The meeting's main aim is to release the new 2010 life expectancy and Healthy Life Years values for the 27 Member States - gaps and trends since 2005 - as well as to discuss how monitoring can inform strategies to reach the EU goal of an increase of 2 HLY by 2020. There will also be two round tables "Improving current data quality and appropriateness" and "What information do we need to aid making policies?" Data providers, policy makers and researchers active in the area of public health information in the EU will be present as well as policy makers in general. To attend the meeting you need to register in advance as the number of seats is limited.

Workshop on IT for Disabilities

9 September 2012 - 12 September 2012 Wrocław, Poland

Assistive Technology (AT) and accessible ICT can help people with disabilities and older adults enable a more independent life, better participation, more inclusion and improved services and support. The workshop aims of exchange and disseminate achievements and research findings in that area. It also intends to stimulate the communication both between researchers working in various areas related to ICT solutions and its use leading to further progress in that field and between researchers and practitioners who might take inspiration to implement their achievements. The workshop intends to launch the regular platform for academic and industry based researchers and practitioners and aspire to become constant event. We invite contributions related both to theoretical and more practical aspects of AT and ICT for disabilities. Deadline for Paper submission is April 22, 2012.

Web Accessibility Policy Making: An International Perspective

This is the third edition of the Web Accessibility Policy Making: An International Perspective white paper jointly researched by G3ict, The Centre for Internet & Society and The Hans Foundation. In 2009, G3ict published a comparative review of the web and electronic accessibility policies of 15 countries and the European Union intended to serve as a guide to policy makers on how web accessibility has been implemented in different countries. Since then, there have seen several relevant developments in the policy landscape, especially in the United States and the United Kingdom. The White Paper has been updated (January 2012) to keep abreast of these new changes.
