"Biomimetic surfaces to interrogate carbohydrate-mediated cell trafficking"

In this multidisciplinary project, the postdoctoral fellow will use state-of-the-art surface biofunctionalization and in situ analysis methods to design advanced biomimetic surfaces. The biomimetic surfaces will be used in novel and quantitative biomolecular and cell biological assays, to study the role of glycosaminoglycans in cellular trafficking.

Cellular motion is guided by extracellular gradients of signaling proteins, so-called chemokines. A family of polysaccharides, known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), help organizing and presenting chemokines on the cell surface and in the extracellular matrix. How GAGs mediate cell migration is currently not well understood. There is reason to believe that the supramolecular presentation of GAGs (e.g. local density, orientation and mobility) is functionally important. The study of such effects poses a challenge, because the ability to control and characterize the presentation of GAGs, in vivo or in vitro, is to date very limited.

The goal of this research project is to develop multifunctional model surfaces that recapitulate selected aspects of the in vivo situation. State-of-the-art surface biofunctionalization and patterning methods (e.g. supported lipid bilayers, microfluidics) and a toolbox of surface-sensitive in situ analysis techniques (e.g. QCM-D, ellipsometry, RICM, AFM, ATR-FTIR, fluorescence methods) will be used to elaborate well-defined surfaces. The biomimetic surfaces will then be used for quantitative biomolecular and cell biological studies.

The team. The research project is part of an Excellence Chair, awarded by the Nanosciences Foundation in Grenoble to Ralf Richter, and will take place in a multidisciplinary team of four strong research groups in the Grenoble research area, led by Pierre Labbé (DCM, University of Grenoble), Hugues Lortat-Jacob (IBS), Catherine Picart (LMGP, Grenoble INP) and Roberto Calemczuk (SPrAM, CEA).

The environment. Grenoble is a pleasant city situated in the French Alps and is one of the most renowned scientific areas in France for biological and nanotechnological studies, providing a vibrant scientific environment.

Required qualifications and terms of employment. We are looking for an outstanding experimentalist with a solid background in physical chemistry, bioengineering, glycobiology or a closely related field. Solid experience with biosurface science is an advantage. The candidate should have keen interest in multidisciplinary work, disposition to collaborate actively with the project partners, and a strong drive to excel in a competitive international environment. The successful candidate will be hired by the Nanosciences Foundation, for the duration of two years, extendable by an additional year. The project can be started immediately. The working language is English.
