Call 1/2015-1

REQUIREMENTS

The Microwave Systems and Nanotechnology (MSN) Department of the Communication Technologies Division (CTD) from the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya announces the opening of a permanent research position. As a succinct overview, the aim of the research in the CTD is to address the most endeavouring challenges that 5G communications technologies will face: those of energy and bandwidth efficiency. CTD research has a strong experimental emphasis, achieved through the use of demonstrators and testbeds, and the focus is on component (subsystem) level and also on PHY and MAC layers.

In relation to the requirements of this position opening, the research activities within the MSN Department focus on emerging communications and sensing technologies, with expertise covering a broad spectrum of frequencies from RF, microwave and millimeter wave, to sub-THz. The areas of applications address a number of sectors from telecommunications, automotive, space, defense, to health and biomedical, security and monitoring.

The focus of the work at MSN Department includes energy harvesting systems and self-powered sensors, radio frequency identification (RFID) and wireless power transfer (WPT), flexible electronics, inkjet printing fabrication and carbon nanotubes, substrate integrated waveguide technology, micromachining technology, RF-MEMS and solid state based reconfigurable microwave/millimeter-wave circuits, and power amplifiers.

The permanent researcher will be involved in the above described activities of the MSN Department of the Communication Technologies Division. Furthermore, the researcher also will be asked to work in close cooperation within the research team of the MSN Department.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in telecommunications, electronic and electrical engineering or related area, with a solid background in reconfigurable microwave and millimeter wave circuit design and implementation. Background in modeling of physical phenomena observed with nanostructures, electromagnetic and photonic phenomena is a plus.

The candidate should be familiar with micromachined circuit design and implementation using bulk and surface (monolithic) microfabrication techniques, such as micro-coaxial circuits for millimeter wave applications, suspended microstrip lines for automotive radar and infrared surface plasmon resonance sensors. Special focus is placed on tunable filters for communications and frequency measurement devices based on diode and microelectromechanical systems.

The candidate should provide a publication record for experience assessment in the above mentioned fields. Applicants for this position must be very motivated, with capacity of carrying out innovative research. Experience in national and international R&D projects in the context of R&D institutions is a big plus (this includes, e.g., proposal preparation and project coordination among others). Finally, having supervised both M.Sc. and Ph.D. students will be taken into account as a positive contribution.
