Digital Agenda: award-winning EU-funded project could bring more powerful broadband connections

(28 October 2011) An EU funded project which has developed a long-term solution to Internet traffic congestion has just received a prize at Future Internet Week in Poznan, Poland. The TRILOGY project received the Future Internet Award for its outstanding contribution to the Internet architecture and protocols, which could help provide Europeans with faster, more reliable Internet connections.

(28 October 2011) The European Commission has adopted a Recommendation asking EU Member States to step up their efforts, pool their resources and involve the private sector in digitising cultural material. This is essential to make European cultural heritage more widely available and to boost growth in Europe's creative industries.

Digital Agenda: Commission requests Estonia and Slovakia to comply with public sector information rules

(27 October 2011) The European Commission has requested Estonia and Slovakia to bring their laws in line with EU rules on the re-use of public sector information (PSI). These countries are not currently guaranteeing fair conditions for re-use of public sector information, in breach of the EU's PSI Directive. Estonia and Slovakia have failed to correctly implement most provisions of the Directive, including the prohibition of discriminatory or monopolistic practices by public bodies.

Digital Agenda: Commission requests Greece to implement rules to facilitate telecom networks roll-out

(27 October 2011) The European Commission has requested Greece to adopt legislation to make it easier for telecom operators to install facilities such as ducts, manholes, masts or antennae on, over or under public or private property. Greece was originally scheduled to adopt legislation on such rights of way by the end of 2006 when the country implemented the 2002 EU telecoms rules. But not all the necessary rules have yet been put in place.

EU research and innovation: What role for regions and cities after 2013?

Together with the relevant Directorates-General of the European Commission, the Committee of the Regions invites local, regional and national administrations, institutions, universities and development agencies to discuss the consequences these proposals will have for facilitating better coordination of research and innovation support at local level post-2013. The Forum will also present good practice of regional innovation programmes and projects operating under the current funding structures, showcasing how to match EU priorities and programmes with specific territorial challenges.

Digital Single Market closer to completion with new Radio Spectrum Policy

(28 October 2011) Member States' representatives in the Council have endorsed a text drawn up with the European Parliament and the Commission that paves the way for setting a comprehensive European radio policy, providing the platform for further improvements to wireless services. The new agreement will foster the roll-out of high speed wireless broadband systems, in particular by requiring Member States to authorise the use of the "digital dividend" 800 MHz band for wireless broadband by January 2013 in all but exceptional circumstances. Moreover, the agreed text will create a wide-ranging and thorough European inventory of spectrum use in the Member States, which will be essential to ensure the most efficient allocation of scarce spectrum resources for wireless services in Europe.

University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf first in Europe to achieve top-rating for paperless, digital workflows

(26 October 2011) University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Germany has achieved Stage 7 of the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM). It is the first hospital in Europe to achieve the top rating on HIMSS Analytics' EMRAM scale, which evaluates the digititalisation level of a hospital; stage 7 is awarded for achieving a paperless medical record environment.

Survey on awareness of 116

(27 October 2011) The European Commission published a survey on awareness of 116, pan- EU numbers for hot- and helplines. The survey showed that citizens across the EU expressed strong support for the five types of hot- and helplines (85-91% of Europeans think that these numbers are fairly or very useful) which demonstrates the importance of providing these services free of charge and of unifying them under a single numbering range throughout the EU.

Online survey on immigrants and information and communications technologies

(27 October 2011) A research project funded by the European Commission has launched an online survey to see how immmigrants use new information and communications technologies. Participants are asked how they use the Internet and mobile phones to talk with friends, to find information, to get a job, and to participate in the local community and wider society. The survey takes 15 minutes to complete, and one in ten respondents will receive 15 minutes of free phone calls as a reward.

Workshop on developing intelligent user interfaces for e-accessibility

14 February 2012 Lisbon, Portugal

The workshop will explore the applicability of different modalities of interaction (speech, gesture, haptic interface etc.) and investigate ways to develop intelligent adaptation systems that meet accessibility criteria and can personalize interfaces according to the range of abilities of the user. A particular focus will be given on interoperability though the adherence to standards for accessibility such as WAI-ARIA and ISO standards. Deadline for the submission of papers - 30th November 2011.

Final BRAID (Bridging Research in Ageing and ICT Development) Workshop

3 November 2011 - 4 November 2011 Budapest

The efficient engagement of relevant stakeholder groups is a key ingredient in the BRAID project for successfully addressing pertinent issues relevant to ICT and ageing. The final BRAID workshop will be reaching out to representatives from the Central and Eastern Europe region, in order to share the BRAID vision with key stakeholders and local authorities, as well as to get an insight on the current situation and future prospects in the area of ICT and ageing for countries that have most recently joined the European Union. Overall, the aim of this workshop is to take that extra step towards planning for an effective implementation of the BRAID roadmap, through actively involving all participants of the workshop in a series of activities within the context of an "implementation exercise". Furthermore, local stakeholders will be invited to address theoretical and practical issues relevant to ICT and ageing in the context of Hungary and the wider region. BRAID is a FP7 Support Action funded within the specific programme "Cooperation" and the research theme "ICT" of the 7th European Framework Programme (Objective ICT-2009.7.1 ICT & Ageing).
