The call for Formación de Personal Universitario 4-year contract from the Secretaría de Estado de Educación, Formación Profesional y Universidades (BOE 27 Diciembre de 2014 Sec III pág. 105893) is now open. We seek for PhD to apply for this Fellowship to carry out a project in Structural Biology related to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) transactions and regulatory proteins in the Structural MitoLab (http://www.ibmb.csic.es/index.php?pg=laboratorio&tab=lab_home&idLaboratorio=13) of the Institute of Molecular Biology Barcelona, CSIC, located at the premises of Barcelona Science Park, www.pcb.ub.edu.

Mitochondria are at the crossroads of ageing and major health problems such as cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is altered in all these conditions. The goal of the thesis is the structural characterization of mtDNA-regulatory proteins, alone or in complex with DNA. Possible incursions to DNA structure characterizations might be considered during the thesis. The experimental techniques to do such studies include molecular biology, protein purification, X-ray crystallography and depending on the evolution of the project, electrophoretic characterization of DNA structure, atomic force microscopy of protein/DNA complexes and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The candidate should have a strong motivation in experimental sciences and a strong will to learn, get involved in day-to-day life of the laboratory and, because our laboratory is composed by international researchers, be fluent in
English.

Interested candidates may get more information about our projects, which are basically related to mitochondrial proteins and mitochondrial DNA regulation, at http://www.ibmb.csic.es/index.php?pg=laboratorio&tab=lab_home&idLaboratorio=13

The call has two selection phases:

Phase 1 - a first phase to present to the Secretaría de Estado the academic certificate. From all candidates, the Secretaría will select 2400 persons to pass to phase 2. Deadline, 6th of February.

Phase 2 - phase to present a project of research. Deadline: to be determined. From all candidates, the Secretaría will award 800 candidates with the Fellowship.

The requirements of the student are the following:

- Be in a doctorate program during the present course 2014-2015 (ideally in Spain). Alternatively, have a Master degree or performing Master studies during 20014-2015, which would entitle to access to a doctorate program in the course period 2015-2016.

- If the student performed B. Sc. degree studies ('Grado' level in Spanish Universities) of 180 credits, she/he should have finished the BSc studies before January 1st, 2010. If the Student performed B. Sc studies of 240 credits, she/he should have finished the BSc studies in January 1st 2011.

- B Sc. degree should be have been passed with a 7.4 score at least, M. Sc with 8.25 at least.

Candidates who do not accomplish the conditions stated here or in the aforementioned BOE cannot be further considered.

Interested candidates should send as soon as possible and before January 25, 2015 an e-mail with their CV together with a motivation letter and contact details of two referees to maria.sola@ibmb.csic.es
