PRESS RELEASE
Commission takes first step to ensure life-saving emergency call system for road accidents in place by 2015

(8 September 2011) The first measure to ensure that by 2015 your car can dial emergency services for you when you have a serious accident has been adopted by the European Commission today. The Commission wants the life-saving eCall system to be fitted to all new models of cars and light vehicles from 2015. eCall automatically dials Europe's single emergency number 112 in the event of a serious accident and communicates the vehicle's location to the emergency services. A Commission Recommendation adopted on 8th September, urges Member States to ensure that mobile phone network operators upgrade their infrastructure so that eCalls are efficiently passed on to emergency services.

Cloud Law or Legal cloud ?

30 September 2011 Brussels, Belgium

Are we "legally ready" for cloud computing? Data protection and transfers, new contractual practices and international private law issues are the common topics to be addressed when analysing the phenomenon from a legal point of view. Furthermore, each entity bound by regulatory compliance constraints has to assess whether "going into the cloud" is wise, or even allowed, taking into account its activities and the data or processes that it would like to outsource this way. The aim of the conference is to explore the legal contexts of cloud computing globally, but also from a sector-oriented perspective.

Reaping the benefits of eID in different business sectors within the EU and beyond

29 September 2011 Brussels, Belgium

The European Union acknowledged the need for electronic identification at an early stage. The actual adoption in the member states did not proceed as fast as initially expected. Various reasons have influenced the slow pace, such as the fragmentation of the market of IT solutions, the lack of interoperability among different solutions and the differences in semantic, organisational and legal perspectives between Member States. The European Commission is organising this event that aims to identify commonalities and differences in the use of eID in different economic sectors, so as to identify needs and demand, but also barriers that influence the deployment of eID in Europe.
