REACH112 pilot project: first emergency calls in Total Conversation mode

(17 November 2011) Since 2002, EU telecom rules have required that the 112 emergency number is available free-of-charge everywhere in the EU. However, disabilities, like for example hearing or speech impairments, can make access to the emergency services via the traditional voice telephony impossible, thus putting lives at risk. The EU-funded pilot project REACH112 (REsponding to All Citizens needing Help) is validating alternative modes of telecommunication, may it be real-time text, sign language, lip reading, voice or any simultaneous combination of these modes, as per the Total Conversation concept, for phone calls from or to persons with related disabilities, and with a specific emphasis on calling the emergency services. The pilot project is also looking at how to adapt call centres and how to prepare relay interpreters to handle such calls. The service is tested in 5 pilot countries, namely Sweden, France, United Kingdom, Spain and the Nederland, and the first real emergency calls have been responded to. REACH112 is a three-year project partially funded by the European Commission under the ICT PSP programme (2009-2012).

See the demonstration of the Brainable project at the Innovation Convention 5-6 December 2011

(17 November 2011) The BrainAble project (http://www.brainable.org) seeks to improve the autonomy and quality of life of the physically disabled, based on BNCI (Brain/ Neuronal Computer Interface). By combining affective computing, ambient intelligence and virtual environments, a Brain-Computer Interface enables people to communicate without moving. Visitors of the stand will be able to test the current prototype and experience features such as navigation through the virtual representation of a home, interaction and control of smart home devices as well as the use of social networks and communication tools.

Developing an insole for elderly fall prevention - new European project WIISEL

(17 November 2011) Falls are a major health problem for older adults, through both immediate effects: fractures and head injuries and longer term problems: disability, fear of falling and loss of independence. A new European project, WIISEL (Wireless Insole for Independent and Safe Elderly Living), was created to decrease the incidence of falls in the elderly population. The main goal of WIISEL is to develop an insole for elderly, placed in the shoe, monitoring the way of walking. The system is expected to detect changes in gait and balance in daily elderly environment in order to prevent the risk of falls. Moreover, the system will provide security to the elderly directly affecting their quality of life. Thanks to a wireless system and chips built into the insole, the data captured by the movement of the foot are sent to a mobile device or computer, so that the doctor, caregiver or nurse, can follow the evolution of the patient, to know if he follows correctly the rehabilitation or if he returns into bad habits that increase the risk of falling. If this occurs, an alert is sent immediately to the responsible caregiver. The project is cofunded by the European Commission (FP7-ICT) for 3 years, with 3.9 M€ budget and 8 partners from 6 different countries.

New European project: Companions for Seniors Citizens

(17 November 2011) A new European project, ACCOMPANY (Acceptable robotiCs COMPanions for AgeiNg Years), is seeking to develop a robotic companion as part of an intelligent environment, providing services to elderly users in a motivating and socially acceptable manner to facilitate independent living at home. The ACCOMPANY system will provide physical, cognitive and social assistance in everyday home tasks, and will contribute to the re-ablement of the user, i.e. assist the user in being able to carry out certain tasks on his/her own. The project combines a multidisciplinary consortium to tackle the technological as well as human-centred and ethical challenges of the project. Three test sites in three different European countries (UK, the Netherlands, France), as well as a dedicated showcase, will ensure an extensive evaluation process considering cultural differences. The insights gained in the project will be made publicly available, thereby strengthening the European service robotics research and industry. The project started on 1st of October 2011 and will run for a period of 36 months.

Telemedicine for stroke rehabilitation

(9 November 2011) Stroke is a disease with very high socio-economic impact. In average the healthcare expenditure cost for Strokes across different countries in Europe and USA is 3% of their entire healthcare expenditure. This includes inpatient treatment cost, outpatient hospital visits and long-term rehabilitation and care. Analysis showed that costs of long-term care have increased from 13% to 49% of overall costs in average in recent years. Therefore there is an urgent need for devising an effective long-term care and rehabilitation strategy for Stroke patients, which will involve the patients actively in the process while minimising costly human intervention. The new EU funded 'StrokeBack' project intends to develop an automated remote rehabilitation system by blending advances of ICT and practical clinical knowledge that will empower the patients and their immediate carer for effective application of the rehabilitation protocol in home settings. The project runs from 1st October 2011 until 30th September 2014.
