A PhD position is available in the area of nanotribology and nanomanipulation.

The aim of this PhD project is to characterize the frictional response of different materials on the nanometer scale (see E. Gnecco & E. Meyer, eds., "Fundamentals of Friction and Wear on the Nanoscale", Springer, 2007, for an overview on this topic). The experiments will be carried out with a state-of-the-art AFM operated in different environments, including liquids and dry nitrogen. The systems to be investigated will include but will not be limited to mineral surfaces, organic crystals, and graphene. The goal is to map the friction forces experienced by sharp probing tips sliding on the surfaces with sub-molecular resolution. The PhD candidate will also estimate the shear stress required to detach organic and inorganic nanoislands and try to manipulate them in a controlled way on the substrate. The use of mechanical vibrations to facilitate this task will be explored. Besides its fundamental interest, this project may have interesting follow-ups in the fields of molecular
electronics and water decontamination.

The project is to be carried out at the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in Nanoscience (IMDEA Nanociencia), a vibrant multidisciplinary and international research institute in Madrid, Spain:

Candidates should have a degree in Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, Geology or a related subject. Experience in atomic force microscopy, crystal growth or
computer programming is desirable.

The application deadline for this position is August 31th 2013. The start date must be between October 2013 and January 2014. To apply, send your CV and a short motivation letter including the contact details of at least one reference to Dr Enrico Gnecco:
enrico.gnecco@imdea.org.
