This PhD project aims at the study and analysis of novel techniques for protecting critical cloud computing infrastructures against misbehaviours, intrusions and suspicious activities. This project includes the study of intrusion detection systems in order to protect complex and heterogeneous large-scale cloud computing data canters. In summary, this project is focused on the study of new approaches to provide a transparent real-time protection for critical cloud infrastructures against both insider and outsider attacks. The idea is to improve the current state-of-the-art security in cloud computing architectures analysing aspects as intrusion detection, malware detection, VM image management, performance impact due to security, network security, data security, authentication, authorization, trust management and monitoring, among others factors in order to provide significant steps in the field. This PhD project could be aligned with some other research projects running in the School related to cloud computing and security.

The successful applicant will carry out the project within the AVCN Research Centre (http://www.uws.ac.uk/avcn), which has established expertise in the proposed research areas. The supervisors have been recently involved in a number of funded national or international projects, and the outcomes of their research have been disseminated through numerous prestigious international publications. AVCN has its own state-of-the-art lab including a private cloud R&D platform. The successful applicant should be proficient in programming (software development), and preferably have good knowledge of networking technologies.

Funding Notes:
  • UWS is an inspiring, vibrant place to study with a growing research community; an important aspect of which is its outstanding and committed research students.
  • Successful candidates will receive a £13,863 annual stipend payable for three years and payment of tuition fees (current value £3900).
  • This studentship is open to Home/EU candidates with a first degree in a relevant discipline. Non-EU students can apply, but will not receive the stipend and will be required to pay fees.
  • The deadline date for applications is 16th May 2014. Candidates must be available to commence their studies in October 2014.
