First European Convergence Workshop on a pan-European eHealth Infostructure

3 June 2010 Reykjavik, Iceland

This first Workshop aiming at the design of a pan-European eHealth Infostructure will take place at the 10th International Special Topic Conference of the EFMI. The topic of the workshop is "Semantics and ontologies - opportunities and challenges for convergence". The event is initiated by the FP7 Integrating Project DebugIT. It will bring together various EU FP7 and CIP projects, including DebugIT, PSIP, EU-ADR, epSOS and CALLIOPE, for a full day meeting. The second part of the day is open to the wider public.

Conference on Privacy and Scientific Research

This conference, organised by the Belgian Privacy Commission, will take place in the context of the 2010 Belgian EU presidency and focuses on several target groups : the European data protection authorities, national and international academics and researchers. Two areas of scientific research will be examined: historical and clinical-medical research. The conference is primarily intended as a discussion forum on best practices in both areas, workshops will therefore be organised alongside the traditional plenary sessions.

VPHOP satellite symposium 'Assessing fracture risk: the future for designing new therapies' at IOF2010

(18 May 2010)More than 400 qualified clinical experts from all over the world met at what is currently the most important clinical appointment on Osteoporosis worldwide to discuss preliminary results and strategic objectives of the VPHOP project. During this satellite symposium six international experts, all key figures in the VPHOP consortium, presented to the clinical audience various relevant aspect of the VPHOP research project. "The radical innovation of the VPH initiative, and of the VPHOP project that represents its spearhead, is the integration" said Mr. Viceconti, VPHOP Project Coordinator. "While each of the technologies described by my colleagues are already revolutionary in themselves, we plan to integrate them into a personalized, predictive and integrative hypermodel of the patient, capable to assist the clinical user in all stages from screening to treatment planning for patient at a very high risk of fracture". Connectathon enhances interoperability for healthcare information systems

(19 May 2010)The event offered opportunities for important activities to take place, such as meetings on international Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standards and ePharmacy. Moreover, industry, users and a number of prestigious participants, such as national and European institutions, including the European Commission's Directorate-General Information Society and Media, grasped the opportunity to learn more through the workshops on the following EU-funded projects: the European Patients Smart Open Services (epSOS), the Healthcare Interoperability Testing and Conformance Harmonisation (HITCH) and the Smart Personal Health Systems.

Digital Agenda: Information and Communication Technologies top total corporate R&D investment in Europe

(12 May 2010)Europe's Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector, accounting for just 4.8% of GDP, leads the way in private research and development (R&D) in the EU, with 25% of total investment and 32% of researchers working in the private sector in 2007, according to a European Commission report released today. However, even with these numbers the EU is still lagging behind global competitors in terms of both public and private ICT R&D investment. This investment gap is identified as one problem to tackle by the forthcoming European Digital Agenda, one of seven flagship initiatives of the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

ICT enabled independent living for elderly

Originally performed on behalf of the European Commission, the present study gives a status quo analysis of the research landscape and products in the scope of Ambient Assisted Living. The investigations have been undertaken in all 27 member countries of the European Union. This study provides the first comprehensive data collection in this field. It includes about 1 000 organisations all over Europe, 180 products and 150 research projects.

Business Models for eHealth - study report

15 March 2010

This report presents the analysis of a study funded by the ICT for Health Unit to explore business models for the implementation of value-creating and sustainable eHealth systems in Europe. It also introduces a set of policy recommendations for the European Commission and other stakeholders, with the ultimate objectives being a) the improvement of the overall quality and efficiency of provision of health services in general via eHealth services, taking into consideration the present and future socio-economic and financial challenges faced by national healthcare authorities in Europe; an b) the consolidation of eHealth services as a mature market where European industry can play a leading role via the provision of innovative technological and organisational solutions.
