We are seeking for a highly motivated early stage PostDoc to apply for a Juan de la Cierva - Formación 2-year contract at the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (BOE 5 Diciembre 2014, Sec III, pág 100530), to carry out a project in Structural Biology related to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and regulatory proteins, in our Institute of Molecular Biology Barcelona, CSIC.

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence is known since 1981. However, the structural features of this genome are still poorly characterized. Mitochondria are at the crossroads of major health problems such as cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, and ageing. mtDNA is altered in all these conditions. The goal of the work is the structural characterization of short or long regions of this DNA, alone or in complex with binding proteins that may alter its structure. In addition, crystallization of protein/DNA complexes, small-angle X-ray scattering and atomic-force microscopy will be considered as additional goals.

For the Juan de la Cierva-formación candidate must have obtained her/his doctorate title between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2014. As the project is essentially wet-lab oriented, the candidate should have a strong background in experimental sciences with expertise in cloning and protein purification. Experience in macromolecular crystallography will be an advantage. Fluent use of English language is compulsory, and a very positive, highly motivated attitude towards Research.
