A Giant Step for Ageing Research in Europe - call for multidisciplinary research applications

(6 June 2011) The European Research Area in Ageing (ERA-AGE 2) has launched Europe's first joint research programme in the ageing field by publishing a call for multidisciplinary research applications on "Active and Healthy Ageing Across the Life Course". The call is dedicated to the achievement of enhanced and healthy ageing and, in particular, to address the major priority established by the AHAIP (Active and Healthy Ageing Innovation Partnership) of a 2 year increase in healthy life expectancy in the European Union by 2020. Twelve funders in nine countries have committed €4.2 million to fund research projects of up to three years. This is Europe's first joint call for ageing research and follows the second round of ERA-AGE's post-doctoral fellowship programme, FLARE (Future Leaders of Ageing Research in Europe). Applications are invited from multidisciplinary research groups representing 3 to 5 funding countries. Stage-one pre-proposals can be submitted between 1 June 2011 and 3 October 2011 to investigate specific research questions related to these three objectives of the call: - Generate new knowledge on the biological, clinical, behavioural, social and environmental factors that enable individuals to live actively and healthily into later life. - Explore comparatively different models, methods, approaches and good practices in societal responses to increased longevity which emphasise both social inclusion and sustainability. - Engage in effective knowledge exchange activities that will assist European and other countries to achieve the goal of increasing healthy life expectancy by 2 years by 2020.

Benchmarking deployment of e-health among general practitioners II — SMART 2011/0033

(Deadline: 10/08/2011) The objective of this study is to measure the use of ICT by primary care physicians in the EU-27, Croatia, Iceland, Norway and Turkey; through the organisation of a survey to collect the necessary data and indicators to describe the main relevant dimensions of the phenomena: use of internet and other ICT based applications by primary care physicians, for their work, including communication with patients and the electronic exchange of information with primary and secondary care and other health actors, with nurses, carers, insurance and pharmacies. The results of that study will be used as a key baseline for the second eHealth action plan (eHAP) 2012-2020. They will be also an input for the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP-AHA). The role of general practitioners is very important for the diffusion of relevant innovation into health care systems. The study is also expected to identify the main differences between European countries so to allow an evidence based dialogue and an effective coordination between national policy efforts and the common European initiatives. The results will provide a substantial input to the 2013 Digital Agenda Scoreboard.

DK: Danish eHealth portal allows users of health services to become better informed about their rights

12 May 2011

Health services users require a broad overview of their rights as patients. In an effort to meet this need, and with the assistance of this target group, Danish eHealth portal 'Sundhed.dk' has compiled key information under a theme called 'Patient Rights'. In order to be able to decipher the law and to seek the aid of a patient advisor in doing so, information from several different areas is needed so as to get an overview of rights and options as a patient in the healthcare system. The Danish eHealth portal has collected information from several entities in the form of an overview of essential patients' rights with links to detailed and relevant data. This new section has been well received by the portal users.
