EU: PONTE platform prototype to be released soon

PONTE EU funded project

A prototype of the 'Efficient Patient Recruitment for Innovative Clinical Trials of Existing Drugs to other Indications' platform (PONTE platform) will be released this month (April 2012). The wider research community will thus have the opportunity to test run and review the tools that the platform will offer. PONTE is a European project intended to establish a platform to help new uses for existing drugs. It will offer vital assistance throughout each stage of the process - from the moment an idea is generated through to the selection of suitable volunteers for the trial.

SE: National Patient Summary users are satisfied, says survey

The healthcare staff of the municipality of Örebro (southern Sweden) rates highly the National Patient Summary (Nationell patientöversikt - NPÖ, in Swedish) service. Nine out of ten NPÖ users are 'satisfied' or 'very satisfied' with it, and more than 60 % of them believe that it has been highly or very highly beneficial for their work, according to a recent survey. The National Patient Summary enables qualified healthcare staff to access, with the patient's consent, online medical records filed by other caregivers and thereby obtain a comprehensive snapshot of the patient's health. This provides a better basis for diagnosis, treatment and monitoring while facilitating healthcare coordination between the healthcare professionals involved. The survey was conducted at the end of 2011 by a market research company for Inera AB - a software company jointly owned by the Swedish counties - which develops IT services on behalf of the Centre for eHealth in Sweden (CeHis) such as the NPÖ project.

ES: Research project 'e-Nefro' on telecare for kidney patients starts in Andalusia

The University Hospital Virgen Macarena of Seville and the Superior Engineering School of Seville University are jointly carrying out a new research project for the implementation of a complete telecare system for kidney patients. The research project is named 'e-Nefro - Arquitectura modular adaptable para la teleasistencia integral de paciente renales' (Modular customisable architecture for complete kidney patient telecare', in English). The research partners will study the implementation of a telemedicine system for the monitoring of pre-dialysis patients or patients under substitutive treatment (peritoneal dialysis), with the aim of improving their quality of life and healthcare. The project is funded by the Health Institute Carlos III, a public research institute attached to the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, and it will run for three years.

FR: First telemedicine pilot in the field of COPD

A pioneering telemedicine project for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has recently been launched in a hospital in central France to assess the impact of readmissions due to COPD exacerbations. "Telemedicine programmes already exist in pulmonology, but mainly for patients with sleep apnea," said project leader Dr André Marcuccilli. To his knowledge, the 'Hospitadom' project, which is being carried out at the Moulins-Yzeure Hospital, is the first COPD feasibility study of its kind in France; it uses a Danish pilot as a model. According to the hospital media kit, the pilot project aims to 'establish a telemonitoring system to support and improve the care of chronic respiratory patients.' The study plans to recruit 100 COPD patients who were hospitalised following exacerbations, and then to randomly distribute them between home telemedicine monitoring and conventional care for 15 days.

BE: Electronic incident reporting and complaints handling enhances patient safety at Bruges hospital

An electronic incident reporting and complaints handling system has dramatically reduced the number of complaints relating to medical errors in AZ Sint-Lucas hospital in Bruges. The patient safety software was implemented in early November 2010. In 2011, the number of incidents reported at the hospital - the first in mainland Europe to implement this kind of system - tripled from 100 to 300. It doubled again in the following eight months, with further improvements expected, as staff is trained on the new system and user confidence grows. The hospital has also gained an increased ability to analyse trends and numerical proof of the existence of incidents - meaning that staff now have the tool to help managers improve patient safety.
