3. About CTTC – www.cttc.es

The CTTC is an advanced research center on Information Technologies, Communications and Geomatics, based in Castelldefels (Barcelona). Current research divisions include Communication Networks, Communication Systems, Communication Technologies and Geomatics.

CTTC staff is multidisciplinary and international and has a strong record of participation in European, national and industrial projects. The CTTC is based in the Mediterranean Park of Technology in Castelldefels (Spain), at only 30 minutes, by public transport, from Barcelona city centre. The Park provides excellent conditions for conducting focused research and additional facilities like a Campus Residency for workers and students.

In the following a brief description of CTTC divisions is provided:

a. Communication Networks
Description: The goal of the Communication Networks Division is to optimize end-to-end network infrastructure, including core, metro and access, optical and wireless, transport and mobile networks through flexible experimental and simulation frameworks. It has two departments. The Optical Networks & Systems Department involves two main research lines, namely Network Control and Service Management and Optical Transmission and Subsystem. It focuses on control network architectures, protocols and traffic engineering algorithms for the automation and orchestration of end-to-end advanced network services, such as connectivity services and virtual network services, in multi-layer and multi-domain software-defined optical transport networks. This includes the design of spectrally-efficient transmission systems, advanced performance monitoring and impairment mitigation techniques, flexible technologies and subsystems for high-capacity optical transport networks. The Mobile Networks D
epartment involves three main research lines. The Elastic Mobile Networks line focuses on software-defined networking and network functions virtualization in mobile networks towards an efficient network resource consumption, The Big Data and Self-Organization for Mobile Networks line focuses on network-wide optimization and automated decision-making based on learning from past experience. Finally, the Sustainable Mobile Networks line focuses on designing energy-efficient mobile networks, potentially including harvested energy towards nearly-zero energy networks. b. Communication Systems
Description: In the Communication Systems Division (or CSD for short) at CTTC we combine in an integrated unit a deep understanding of theoretical foundations and frontier research on signal processing and information theory with a genuine passion for experimentation and prototyping. That means a daily-basis interaction between researchers and skilled engineers, all of them with a common hands-on approach to the cutting-edge technologies that allow the implementation of the ultimate theoretical developments on communication systems and related applications. We actively motivate the spring of new ideas, concepts, technological approaches and the confrontation of models or hypotheses to the real world, all of it conducted following the highest quality standards of R+D management and thanks to an outstanding staff of professional researchers.
Our quality indicators range from a large number of publications in world-class, peer-reviewed scientific journals, conferences and workshops to a number of demonstrators, testbeds and industrial developments that take equations and theories to practical developments effectively transferred in industrial-grade form factors. We collaborate with industrial and academic partners bilaterally or through funded research programs, being active in research projects funded by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020), National and Regional Government research programs, and the European Space Agency, as well as by direct contracts with local and international companies.
We invite you to explore all the original research and scientific knowledge that we are producing, and how we substantiate the abstract scientific reason into practical developments and applications transferred to the industry. For more information: http://systems.cttc.es

c. Communication Technologies
Description: The research of the Communication Technologies Division (CTD) is organized in four Departments:
1) Machine to Machine Communications (M2M): The M2M Department is focused on both theoretical and experimental research in the field of machine-type communications. This Department conducts research at the lower layers of the protocol stack to facilitate M2M applications with particular focus on Radio Resource Management, scheduling and Medium Access Control, power management, and optimal coding at the PHY layer.
2) Smart Energy Efficient Communication Technologies (SMARTECH): Research activities, both fundamental and experimental, aim at improving the energy efficiency of wireless technologies for human-type communication in HetNets. In particular, SMARTECH aims to provide advanced PHY layer solutions, cooperative network coding-assisted protocols, cognitive aware radio resource management schemes, and power demand algorithms.
3) Physical-layer Implementation of High Performance Communication Systems (PHYCOM): The scope of PHYCOM is to conduct research on efficient PHY-layer real-time implementations of modern bit-intensive communication systems, encompassing as well research on the design of RF transceivers. PHYCOM encapsulates all levels of PHY-layer prototyping and its main research outputs are providing proof of concept and validation of novel PHY layers aimed at increasing the spectral efficiency of future communication systems (e.g., 5G).
4) Microwave Systems and Nanotechnology (MSN): The research activities within MSN focus on emerging communications and sensing technologies, with expertise covering a broad spectrum of frequencies from RF, microwave and millimetre wave, to sub-THz. The scope of the research includes energy harvesting systems and self-powered sensors, radio frequency identification (RFID) and wireless power transfer (WPT), flexible electronics, smart textiles, inkjet printing fabrication and carbon nanotubes, micromachining technology, RF-MEMS and solid state based reconfigurable microwave/millimetre-wave circuits, power amplifiers, and new electronic materials including multiferroics, superconductors and acoustic devices.

d. Geomatics

Description:
The Geomatics Division activities are focused in two main areas: the area of positioning and navigation, and the area of remote sensing and ground-based sensors. The first one conducts research in order to make kinematically acquired data ready for interpretation. For this purpose, this department has specialized in precise navigation and trajectory determination with multi-sensor systems and in the orientation and calibration of navigation and remote sensing sensors. In the past recent years, this area has used these techniques for airborne, terrestrial and UAV-based geodata acquisition and mapping applications. The second one conducts research and development activities in the analysis and exploitation of data coming from spaceborne, airborne and terrestrial active remote sensing sensors for a wide range of applications. These activities are related to active sensor types, as for example Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Laser Scanners. Nevertheless, it has experience with
passive sensors that produce for instance optical images. From the applications point of view the group is highly specialized in the measurement and monitoring of deformations.
