Digital Agenda: cyber-security experts test defences in first pan-European simulation

(4 November 2010)Europe's cyber security experts are testing their responses today in the first ever pan-European cyber-attack simulation exercise. In "Cyber Europe 2010", experts will try to counter simulated attempts by hackers to paralyse critical online services in several EU Member States. The simulation will be based on a scenario where internet connectivity between European countries would be gradually lost or significantly reduced in all participating countries so that citizens, businesses and public institutions would find it difficult to access essential online services. In the exercise, Member States will need to cooperate with each other to avoid a simulated total network crash.

Tensions between Intellectual Property Rights and the ICT standardisation process: reasons and remedies

22 November 2010 Brussels, Belgium

Key ICT standards are perceived by many as critical technology platforms with a strong public interest dimension. However, concerns are voiced that Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and their exclusivity potential, may hinder or prevent standardisation. The European Commission and the European Patent Office (EPO) are organising a conference to address some specific issues on patents and ICT standards: are today's IPR features still compatible with fast moving markets and the very complex requirements of ICT standardisation in a global knowledge economy environment? Where are problems that we can we fix?

Translational Issues in BCI Development: User Needs, Ethics, and Technology Transfer

2 December 2010 - 3 December 2010 Rome, Italy

The brain-computer interface (BCI) technology uses brain signals to directly drive external devices. Over the last decade, EEG-based BCIs have begun to provide basic communication and motor control abilities to people with severe motor disabilities, thus offering a unique opportunity to improve their quality of life. In spite of the remarkable advancement in computing capabilities (signal acquisition and processing, translation algorithms...), a large gap still exists between the promises of the neural engineering achievements and the clinical application reality in terms of BCIs as a daily use assisted device and as add-on intervention in the rehabilitation protocols. The goal of this workshop is to explore current and future scenarios in this field.
