PhD Fellowship: High temperature energy storage: materials and systems

Supervisor: Dr. Abdessamad Faik

Goal: The Goal of this project is the investigation of different classes of materials (salts, metal alloys) as possible thermal energy storage systems and to determine their reactivity as a function of the experimental condition and the composition. The deep knowledge of the materials will allow designing new synthesis routes to obtain systems with the best performances. Different materials will be taken into account to achieve a wide overview and identify the most promising candidates for a future application. The objective is to use the materials developed during the project to arrive to a possible application in lab. scale system.

Approach: Two main research lines will be followed: On one side, the investigation of anhydrous inorganic salts using complex mixtures to reach improved properties compared to the mixtures used nowadays. This will allow to obtain ternary and quaternary systems characterized by a wide melting temperatures range and high stability allowing to use them both as sensible materials or phase change materials. On the other side, the study of eutectic metal alloys as phase change materials. This research lines require the synthesis of the materials and the complete physicochemical characterization with the identification of different parameters such as melting enthalpy, melting temperature, thermal conductivity compatibility with the material of the reactor, cyclability, etc. The materials developed in this study will be used as thermal energy storage media in a specially designed experimental lab-scale reactor to approach the real conditions.

Interest of the project: The development and utilization of solar energy is strongly linked to the identification/modification of suitable materials that could be good energy storage media. Especially when we consider energy storage through latent (by using phase change materials) or sensible heat, a great number of possible materials that could be used are quoted in literature but, at this stage, none of them possess all the requirements needed for an application in solar power plants.

This project and the results obtained will give a contribution to the development of existing and new materials for medium and high temperature energy storage applications such as concentrated solar power and industrial recovering heat. This is a very attractive field of research with many problems that remain to be solved and it is an important issue within the general concern for the environment protection.

What we offer

Eligible candidates must be registered master students at the UPV/EHU or at other European Universities and being eligible for pre-doctoral fellowship programs.

The contract will commence between September and November 2012. By then, the student should hold the Master degree to have access to the PhD program of a University.

Interested candidates please e-mail the supervisor with its reference in the subject including the following information:

A cover letter
Your CV including the BA/BSc qualification on a scale of 1-4
Names (including e-mail address) of at least two referees
(*) for non-european candidates, the position will be available only once researchers obtain all the immigration permits.

What we need

1.- Conditions

- Eligible students: candidates must hold a Master degree before the PhD fellowship begins
- National and international candidates are elegible.
- English and skill communications would be particularly valuable.
