PhD Fellowship: Na or Li salt-polymer hybrid nanoparticles as electrolytes for solid-state batteries

Supervisors: Dr. Michel Armand, Dr. Irune Villaluenga

Goal: The main goal of this project is solid electrolytes in which the anion is anchored to avoid concentration gradients, with only Na+ or Li+ mobile, keeping good mechanical properties and relatively good ionic conductivities.

Approach: The materials selected to accomplish this project are new hybrid nanoparticles as electrolytes for Na-ion or Li-ion batteries, based on nanoscale organic/silica hybrid materials (NOHMs). For this, several polymer electrolytes will be prepared from nanoparticles grafted either with polymer stands or/and plasticizer (such as ionic liquid, organic compounds with high dielectric constant, etc.) or/and with a Na or Li salt derived from a highly delocalized anion. Polymer or block-copolymer could be used as binder resp. plasticizer.

Interest of the project:The development of new polymer electrolytes would solve one of the main materials challenges in the battery field. The construction of a solid electrolyte battery is more tolerant to shock, vibration and mechanical deformation. The use of a polymer electrolyte would eliminate the need for containment of the liquid electrolyte, simplifying cell design. Moreover, the polymer electrolytes would solve some problems of liquid systems, such as leakage, poor compatibility with electrodes and safety hazards. This latter issue is very relevant because the battery market is evolving to bigger systems, as electric automobiles and busses, thus, it is reasonable to be concerned about safety when bigger and more powerful cells are manufactured and disseminated. During the past 30 years, much revolutionary progress has been made in polymer electrolytes. However, for the state-of-the-art technology of polymer electrolyte, there is still a number of technical hindrance
s such as the low ion conductivity, poor cyclic performance and high manufacturing costs, etc. which need to be solved. In any case, the polymer electrolyte is a developing trend for both polymer science and electrochemistry science and a very attractive field to work in.

What we offer

Eligible candidates must be registered master students at the UPV/EHU or at other European Universities and being eligible for pre-doctoral fellowship programs.

The contract will commence between September and November 2012. By then, the student should hold the Master degree to have access to the PhD program of a University.

Interested candidates please e-mail the supervisor with its reference in the subject including the following information:

A cover letter
Your CV including the BA/BSc qualification on a scale of 1-4
Names (including e-mail address) of at least two referees
(*) for non-european candidates, the position will be available only once researchers obtain all the immigration permits.

What we need

1.- Conditions

- Eligible students: candidates must hold a Master degree before the PhD fellowship begins
- National and international candidates are elegible.
- English and skill communications would be particularly valuable.
- Candidates should be highly motivated to pursue a scientific career
- Length: 3 years
- Economical offer: 18.500 € gross per year (aprox. 15.000 net)
- Funding:
* 5 best researchers evaluated: CIC Energigune will assume the investment based on its internal funds. Nevertheless those candidates will be encouraged to apply for grants.
