The Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya is an advanced research center established in Barcelona (Spain) which is devoted to basic and applied R&D related to the physical and lower layers of communications systems. At present time, the CTTC is interested in filling the following Early Stage Researcher position in Energy Area (IQe).

Reference: Call 1/2011-1 GREENET –CTTC – 1

One Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position is available at the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC)/ Intelligent Energy Area (IQe). This position is funded by the European Commission under the Marie Curie Initial Training Network Programme (project GREENET).
We address (pre-PhD) researchers with an MSc aiming at significantly improving their career perspectives from both the PUBLIC and PRIVATE sector.
The duration of the appointment is 3 years. Applicants may also request to be considered as candidates for PhD programs.

RESEARCH TOPIC :

ESR will pursue research on green radio networks. In particular, the ESR will work on the analysis of Spatial Modulation for the design of energy-efficient MIMO schemes and for their actual implementation in the next generation of wireless communication systems and networks. In addition the ESR will work on the development of a joint design of algorithms, procedures and mechanisms for Network Coding schemes that take into account realistic operations of cooperative over noisy and faded wireless links, in collaboration with other ESR involved in the project
This is the challenging research goal to be undertaken by the recruited ESRs.

Junior researchers with an MSc, which gives access to a PhD program in Spain, in telecommunications, electrical engineering, computer science, or related fields, capacity of carrying out innovative research, are highly encouraged to apply for these positions.

The candidate must have knowledge on MIMO, Spatial Modulation and/or Network Coding. Applicants should also have a solid background in some of the following fields: Information theory, communication theory, signal processing, and optimization theory, network information theory, and coding theory. Experience on any or some simulation environments such as MATLAB, MATHEMATICA, MAPLE, ns-2, ns-3 and/or C/C++ is required.

The recruited ESR will work in close collaboration with the other academic partners of the project:

- Technical University of Catalonia (UPC-BarcelonaTECH)
- The University of Edinburg
- University of Trento
- NCSR Demokritos
- Instituto de Telecomunicacoes

and with the possibility of collaboration with researchers from the industry partners also involved in the project:

WEST Aquila, Italy
Acticom, Germany
EADS, FranceInnoroute, Germany

ELIGIBILY
- The recruited researchers should be, at the time of selection, in the first four years of their research careers (measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate).
- Also: ESR should not already have a PhD and they should have the qualifications to embark on a PhD program.
- ESR should be nationals of a country other than Spain or, in case they are Spanish nationals, they should have legally resided and have had their principal activities (work, studies, etc.) in a third country for at least 3 out of the last 4 years,.
- ESR (regardless of their nationalities) must not have resided or carried out their main activities (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.

FINANCIAL PROVISIONS

Marie Curie ITNs provide competitive financial support to the ESR including:
- a competitive monthly living and mobility allowance,
- a yearly travel allowance (i.e., a fixed amount of money based upon the direct distance between the location of origin of the researcher and Spain),
- a career exploratory allowance (i.e., a single payment for attending job interviews, additional courses, job fairs, etc.), and
- coverage of the expenses related to the participation of the ESR in research and training activities (contribution to research-related costs, meetings, conference attendance, training actions, etc.).
