VPHOP - Musculoskeletal ageing, a technological renaissance for osteoporotic patients

(22 February 2012) Osteoporotic Virtual Physiological Human is a European osteoporosis research project within the framework of the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) initiative. It is using advanced imaging and physiological modelling technologies to predict the risk of bone fracture in osteoporotic patients. By use of the VPHOP technology, evaluation of the absolute risk of bone fracture will be much more accurate than a prediction based on external and indirect determinants, as currently takes place in clinical practice.

SCRIPT- New Move to Use Robots for #Stroke Rehabilitation

(6 December 2011) Due to the high costs of clinical neuro-rehabilitation, post stroke treatments are limited in all countries to only a few weeks after the stroke event. Any system aimed at pro-longing neuro-rehabilitation out of the clinics, for example at patients' homes; that can use low cost treatments, addresses a major issue in our current health care management systems. The SCRIPT project will produce two prototype robotic devices, a passive‐actuated device and one actuated actively, both of which can be used in the stroke patient's home. Provision of motivating and challenging therapeutic activities using a robotic hand and wrist rehabilitation device at home, will provide a chance for more frequent therapies and interactions. It is thought that such frequent interaction will further influence recovery at chronic phases of stroke rehabilitation.

DE: Notification of infectious diseases - Electronic data transmission trial successful (#EHR)

(14 February 2012) No matter which infectious disease, the quick reporting of it to the responsible federal authority, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin, is getting more important than ever. The notification process is expected to be simplified and optimised following the successful implementation of a pilot project, the aim of which was to transmit encrypted messages to the health authorities with the click of a mouse. The test phase of the project was successfully implemented in the Rhein-Kreiss Neuss by the public and private organisations that participated. The reporting doctors, laboratories and hospitals were able to send electronically the sensitive medical data to the local health department, which in turn ensured that the RKI was timely informed about infectious diseases via federal state authorities.
