CIC energiGUNE is looking for a highly motivated candidate with a university degree in electrochemistry, Chemistry, or Materials Science& Engineering to apply for an FPU fellowship PhD Grant.
The offer is aimed at students currently completing or who have already completed a master degree in related subjects: electrochemistry, materials science, physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, etc.
Candidates must show initiative, independent thinking as well as capability to work in collaborative environments. He/she will be part of a multidisciplinary international research team. Good English level is highly recommended.

Eligibility
The position is subject to obtaining a Spanish Ministry FPU Grant: http://www.mecd.gob.es/servicios-al-ciudadano-mecd/catalogo/educacion/becas-ayudas-subvenciones/para-profesores/universitarios/fpu.html
Only candidates with grade records higher than 7.5 (over 10) are encouraged to apply for the grant.

PhD project Description
Research Line: Supercapacitors (EES)
Title: Advanced supercapacitors by synergy between advanced electrode materials and electrolytes
Supervisor: Dr. Roman Mysyk

The PhD project will be focused on going beyond the state-of-the-art in supercapacitors through mutually adapting electrode materials (porous graphene-like carbons) and electrolytes. The expected outcome is to offer supercapacitors with higher energy and power densities as well as a broader temperature range without compromising inherent advantages of supercapacitors such as rapid operation.
On the materials side, the prospective student will work on graphene-like carbons with nanosized pores so as to optimize the electrode/electrolyte interface. On the electrolyte side, he/she will tune the composition of electrolytes to specific electrode materials for establishing the best trade-off between electrochemical stability and compatibility with electrode materials.
The electrode materials will be characterized using a broad spectrum of leading-edge characterization techniques available in CIC EnergiGUNE. Non-Faradaic and asymmetric/hybrid supercapacitor cells will be built and extensively characterized with electroanalytical tools.
The work program will allow the PhD candidate to develop his/her skills in both materials science and electrochemistry, learn the fascinating field of supercapacitors and understand the main challenges of today´s research in emerging energy storage technologies.
