CIC energiGUNE is looking for a highly motivated, talented and committed student with a university degree on Chemistry, or Materials science-Engineering to apply for an FPU fellowship PhD Grant. The offer is aimed at students currently completing or who have already completed a master degree in related subjects: materials science, physics, chemistry, engineering, etc.
The present PhD thesis is a multidisciplinary task: synthesis advanced structural and electrochemical characterization, as well as cell development. Therefore requires a flexible and open-minded candidate with a strong ability to learn. Other required skills are the ability for working in a team, high level of spoken and written English language and independent working.

Eligibility
Applications are open to students worldwide with a Master Degree in related subjects: materials science, physics, chemistry, engineering, etc.
The position is subject to obtaining a Spanish Ministry FPU Grant:

Only candidates with grade records higher than 7.5 (over 10) are encouraged to apply for the grant.

PhD project Description
Research Line: Na-ion research line (EES)
Title: Towards low-cost and environmentally-friendly aqueous sodium ion batteries
Supervisor: Dr. Montse Casas-Cabanas and Dr. Montse Galceran

The research project will be focused on the development of low-cost and environmentally-friendly aqueous sodium ion batteries for application in next generation of energy storage systems.
Na-ion batteries have attracted more attention recently due to low cost, abundant supply and widespread terrestrial reserves of sodium mineral salts. In addition, the use of aqueous electrolytes in Na-ion systems should have a big impact in cost reduction, greater safety, more environmentally friendly devices, high rate operation, better reversibility and extended cycle life. On the basis of element abundance, Na-ion technology is an ideal alternative to lithium ion batteries and is especially appealing as it can use the same production technology as the LIB with lower cost.
Moreover, the topic of this project is an excellent opportunity for a Ph.D. student to complete its formation in the fields of solid state chemistry and electrochemistry, as well as to get new and useful knowledge on diverse synthesis methods and characterisation techniques that can be useful in a wide range of research areas. The PhD student will have access to advanced characterization techniques such as the XPS, XRD, NMR or TEM.
