The Institute of Geomatics (IG) is a non-profit public consortium of the autonomous Government of Catalonia (Gencat) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). Its mission is to promote and develop Geomatics, through applied research and education, for the general benefit of society. The IG constitutes a multidisciplinary team with strong backgrounds in cartography, geodesy, geography, mathematics, physics, electronic engineering, civil engineering and computer science. The IG has a strong track record of cooperation with other academic groups, with private companies and with public administration at international level, with partners in Europe and the Americas. The IG is located in Castelldefels (Spain), about 30 minutes from Barcelona City centre.

1 Call objective

The aim of this call is the pre-selection carried out by the Institut of Geomatics of experienced research candidates with potential to win an Intra-European Fellowship for Career Development (IEF), a Marie Curie individual action grant within the European People Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Therefore, candidates for a Research position with promising advanced scientific curriculum are encouraged to present their candidature. The creation of a Research position for the candidate within the IG will depend on the outcome of the open competitive IEF joint initiative and shall require a central contribution of the candidate during the proposal generation. The project shall be scientifically exigent and must promise a clear advance of the candidate's career.

2 Candidate profile

The following requirements are minimum requirements of the call, expected to be rather competitive. Therefore, priority will be given to candidates with an outstanding track record and innovative research vision.

• Academic degree:
- A doctorate degree in Geomatics or related disciplines (PhD in computer science, engineering, geography, mathematics, etc.)

• Requirements and expertise:
- Proven track record as a researcher with clear relationship to the "Scientific background and terms of research references for candidates" described
- Significant record of scientific publications is required and the candidate is supposed to have at least 4 publications in international and peer-reviewed journals.

• Mobility:
- Candidates can be of any nationality
- Candidates must currently be based in any EU Member States outside Spain or based in any EU Associated Country
- Active research candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Spain for more than 12 months within the 3 last years

• Language skills:
- The candidate is expected to communicate fluently and flawlessly in English

3 Scientific background and terms of research references for candidates

The candidate will have the opportunity to initiate and conduct research within the Integrated Geodesy and Navigation Unit. The GIN unit conducts research in order to make kinematically acquired data ready for interpretation. For this purpose, the unit has specialized in precise navigation and trajectory determination with multi-sensor systems and in the orientation and calibration of navigation and remote sensing sensors. In the past recent years, the unit has used these techniques for airborne, terrestrial and UAV-based geodata acquisition and mapping applications.

The research should align with at least one of the following terms of reference defined for the unit:

• Static and kinematic precise positioning with INS/GPS/Galileo
• Combined orientation and calibration of photographic and LiDAR sensors
• INS/GNSS hybridization with LiDAR and photographic sensors.
• Kinematic INS/GPS/Galileo gravity determination
• Applications of INS/GNSS to UAV and personal navigation

4 Marie Curie IEF Funding

The competitive Marie Curie IEF funds the advanced training of experienced researchers covering a personal career development programme. The proposal is designed jointly by the experienced researcher and the host institution and presented to the EU competitive programme. The Marie Curie IEF financial support is provided for a period of 12 to 24 months, covering a monthly living and mobility allowance (considering family obligations, social security and taxations) and training expenses (conferences, fees for journals, consumables, etc.).

5 Applications

For applying to this call, please email your application to cv@ideg.es with reference GIN-IEF-MCGRANT-20120510 containing:

• A detailed CV supported by documental evidence
• A proposal introducing candidate's research interests and goals (1 page)
• Contact details of two referees

6 Selection procedure

• Deadline for the presentation of applications: June 7th 2012
• IG will review candidates that have presented the complete documentation and fulfil the indicated requirements and promising candidates will be shortlisted.
• Only shortlisted candidates will receive communication not later than June 13th 2012.
• A personal interview shall be conducted, either remotely or at the IG premises. IG might cover limited travel expenses or other cost related with the interview. In the interview, particular attention will be paid to the possible joint research project to be presented and to the candidate's capability to carry out high level applied research.
• A final decision on IG's pre-selection of candidates shall be communicated not later than June 27th 2012.
• European Commission deadline for the presentation of the resulting joint grant proposal is 16th August 2012.
• Likely starting date may be from 1st January 2013 or later (to be confirmed, depending on joint grant proposal evaluation and outcome).
