PhD Fellowship: Advanced phosphate materials as positive electrode for Na-ion batteries

Supervisors: Dr. Pierre Kubiak


Goal: The goal of this project is to design and investigate the electrochemical properties of new carbon coated phosphate materials as cathode materials for Na-ion batteries. Another goal of the project is the development of large scale synthesis for future industrial application.

Approach: Carbon coated LiM'xMʺ1-xPO4 (M=transition metal) materials will be prepared by ceramic, precipitation and hydrothermal methods. These materials will be delithiated by either chemical or electrochemical oxidation. The obtained carbon coated M'xMʺ1-xPO4 materials will be characterized in their fundamental properties and in their functional properties in Na cells. The techniques to be used include: basic organic and ceramic synthesis, glove box use, electrochemical characterization including: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic cycling, together with other commonly-used materials science characterization techniques (XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman spectroscopy).

Interest of the project: Na-ion batteries can be an interesting alternative to the lithium-ion batteries due to richer resources and lower costs of sodium when compared to lithium. However, the choice of electrode materials available for the sodium technology is much smaller than for the lithium technology. The development of efficient electrode materials in a large scale that can show satisfactory electrochemical properties (i.e. capacity, cycling stability and rate capabilities) under the required operating conditions is a key factor if Na-ion batteries are to be commercialized in the near future. Transition metal phosphate materials are good candidates for their use as positive electrode for Na-ion batteries since they can exchange up to 1 Na per formula at a potential > 3V vs. Na/Na+.

What we offer

Eligible candidates must be registered master students at the UPV/EHU or at other European Universities and being eligible for pre-doctoral fellowship programs.

The contract will commence between September and November 2012. By then, the student should hold the Master degree to have access to the PhD program of a University.

Names (including e-mail address) of at least two referees
(*) for non-european candidates, the position will be available only once researchers obtain all the immigration permits.

- Candidates should be highly motivated to pursue a scientific career
- Length: 3 years
- Economical offer: 18.500 € gross per year (aprox. 15.000 net)
- Funding:
* 5 best researchers evaluated: CIC Energigune will assume the investment based on its internal funds. Nevertheless those candidates will be encouraged to apply for grants.
* Other candidates: CIC Energigune will evaluate the possibility of offering a position based on obtaining a grant.
