Research Assistantship – PhD opportunity

The Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) at the University of Algarve, Portugal, is seeking a highly motivated individual possessing a Master degree to apply for a Research Assistantship opportunity to study the long term variability (decadal scale) of the Canary Current Upwelling System. The proposed research will rely in the systematic exploration of existing time series of relevant oceanographic parameters and environmental data from a wide variety of sources, including remote sensing, in a complementary and integrated way. A background in Oceanography is required, preferentially with a strong component in physical oceanography. Candidates with good skills in statistics and programming will be considered first. The work to be developed can lead to a PhD degree.
The research assistantship is offered on a yearly basis, renewable for 3 years. The stipend is 11.760 euros per year, according to the national rules. The application (letter of interest, certificate of the degree, curriculum vitae and two reference letters) should be e-mailed to Paulo Relvas (prelvas@ualg.pt) between 11 March and 9 April 2010. If necessary an interview can be requested. The position will be made available on 1 May 2010.
