- Reducing the adverse drug event death toll- PSIP project
-
30 November 2011
By some estimates, inappropriate drug prescriptions claim the lives of more Europeans each year than traffic accidents. EU-funded researchers are using ICT to prevent such incidents. A software decision-support system warns healthcare professionals on a case-by-case basis of the potential risks of certain drugs for specific patients. Their ground-breaking system promises to save lives, improve patient care and reduce healthcare costs. PSIP project gathers a team of researchers from across Europe who developed innovative technologies to help doctors prescribe the right drugs based on patients' personal medical histories, the effects and side-effects of the drugs and other situation-specific factors.

- Safer, more active and independent older people: the proven benefits of 'Ambient assisted-living' technology
'When I am less worried, I do not think about the fact that I'm alone': the words of an older Swedish person who participated in a recent trial of European technology that supports active ageing. Loneliness from being disconnected from friends and family, fears about health and safety and worries about security are some of the many burdens of old age. EU-funded researchers are proving how technology can alleviate the problems. Like the person quoted above - who, according to carers, now talks about 'Ambient assisted-living' (AAL) technology 'a lot' - dozens of older people across Europe have recently experienced firsthand the benefits of ICT applications that can make them feel safer and more secure, monitor their health and help them stay in touch with family and friends. As part of the EU-funded 'Mainstreaming on ambient intelligence' (Monami) project, more than 80 elderly people living alone and in care homes in Spain, Slovakia and Sweden tested a wide range of AAL applications. - Researchers make case for continuation of innovative virtual patient project
-
22 September 2011
A pilot EU project that could revolutionise medical care was presented to policymakers and researchers at a hearing on Tuesday 20 September in the European Parliament (EP). Based on the principle that medical treatment could be enhanced if it were based on individual needs, the ITFoM ('IT
future of medicine') project aims to develop a massive network of computer programmes that could make predictions on disease and therapies and how various side effects would react with individuals bodies. The project could lead to the creation of personalised 'virtual patients'. There is a growing request for systems that could give patients more individualised treatment. What works for one person might not always be best for another, and many treatments actually make patients more ill, putting a further burden on health systems. A model-based approach would allow doctors to simulate treatments on the virtual versions of specific patients before trying them out for real. See also: eHealth projects at the EC
